/herp/ reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

I looked through the catalog and couldn't find something similar so I thought I'd start a new QTDDTOTT.

Basically, I've said I'd petsit for my sister. She has a few cats, two rabbits and a dog. A young, unneutered dog (although they are planning on it). He's quite excitable, and while they are away I was hoping to maybe do a little bit of training, because he always jumps up. What would the people of /an/ recommend? I have 3 days. They said they were gonna take him to young dog training as they 'missed the puppy one'. I just don't want my clothes wrecked every time I go round. He's a Beagle Bassett cross. I've also been advised not to let him off the lead during walks as he chases things, so obviously his recall is piss poor.

Please accept this shoddy thread image as an apology for having to answer such a shoddy repetitive question. I'll try and answer other questions in an /r/ type manner. I have a zoology degree, just no dog experience.

Unfortunately you have to be consistent with dogs.. 3 days of training isn't going to stick.

I like clicker training. Start off by just making your noise (I snap my fingers, you can use a clicker, ballpoint pen, etc.) and give a treat. Don't expect the dog to do anything at first- he just needs to associate the noise with treats. When he's got that down, start giving him commands and whenever he makes any amount of progress, click and give a treat.

We've had our 11 year old rescue dog for 6 months now. She is a collie crossbreed, very well behaved and placid in nature and not at all boisterous.

Since day one we've had issues with getting her to eat regularly when food is put down. The shelter had advised us her previous diet had been poor and likely she was used to eating human food.

We have tried various brands and types of dry and wet food. We have tried adding gravy or water and even microwaving it for her to make it smell more appealing. I sometimes even add a carrot or bit of broccoli to tempt her.

We currently stick to the breakfast and dinner routine and the food is left down for 40 minutes. After this it gets taken up as this is how I've fed all my previous dogs without issue.

She currently has some anxiety and stress issues regarding noise when she is outside which she is gradually overcoming on her own. The vet has given her the all clear for any physical illness. So we have booked in with a behavioural specialist at the end of this month as a precaution.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with a similar situation? Could the anxiety issue be caused or adding to her disinterest in food? I've never owned a dog that didn't inhale their food in seconds!

Feed when hungry? just feed an hour later and food becomes a lot more attractive
>>
Well OP honestly I think the problem is that 40 minutes is just too long of a time to leave the food out. It doesn't give her a sense of schedule/urgency in eating her food.

I recommend leaving it out for only 15 minutes, then taking it away. Feeding twice a day is good.

That said, some dogs just don't have as much of an appetite as most do. As long as you know it's not a health issue, I wouldn't be too worried about it. When I was raising my puppy, she went through a period of being disinterested in her normal dog food. I did the 15 minute thing and after a little bit of this, she was back to being eager to eat.

The dog will get hungry eventually. If she doesn't eat after the 15 minutes, take the food away and don't offer it again until the next scheduled meal time. If you offer it more than that, she will know it will be there and so she doesn't have to eat it "right now." You want her to understand that food is only available at meal times. I know it can be hard to not offer the food again if she hasn't eaten, but just remember that a skipped meal or two isn't going to hurt her. She will just be hungry, which will encourage her to eat next time.

Good luck with her! She's really cute.

>I know it can be hard to not offer the food again if she hasn't eaten, but just remember that a skipped meal or two isn't going to hurt her
Not OP, but my dog vomits bile if he skips a meal. Apparently it's normal for dogs to do this if their stomachs are empty for too long; the bile irritates their stomachs if there's nothing else in there.

My dog's the type who always wants to hold out for something tastier and will only eat at the last possible second. I switch up his food often, but he always becomes disinterested in it after a few days, no matter how exciting it was when we first opened the bag.

OP, if your dog was previously fed a shitty diet, and she's still having anxiety issues after being with you for six months (and yeah, anxiety is probably contributing to her disinterest in food), maybe it's time to try bits and pieces of human food to entice her. Nothing too junky, but things like a scrambled egg mixed in with her kibble every now and then won't hurt. Sometimes I do a spoonful of greek yogurt, a spoonful of lowfat cottage cheese, etc. I also do chicken broth, but it seems like that wouldn't work since you've already tried making gravy with her kibble.

I also sometimes pretend to bake my dog's food bowl in the oven without turning it on. He gets really excited for this, but don't use it too often as she'll catch on pretty quickly.

The spiderbro meme caused me to open up to lesser creatures and view them naturally as good and trustworthy, instead of fear or hate them. A a result of that, sometimes there are retarded ones like mosquitoes that I trust then they just suck my blood and make me sad. Which insects should I avoid or kill? Which insects are epic and trustworthy?

I only kill ones that can't be removed otherwise, like gnats or things that appear in overwhelming numbers and/or can't be captured like flies.

For everything else, I have detention jars where they stay overnight until I can release them the next day, unless they happen to be caught early enough that I can just put them out that day.

Let's talk invertebrates /an/

I'm thinking about getting a Vietnamese centipede.
care seems pretty simple, and they're a no touch pet which is something I'm looking for.
Idealy I'd like something I can keep in a 2.5 gallon glass enclosure, but nearly nothing is small enough.

what kind of invertebrates do you guys have? post pics. isopods, insects, arachnids and any other spineless creature are cool.

Only inverts I keep are Freshwater Shrimp various colours (pic) and snails, all aquatic, but I too plan on getting into terrestrial inverts like Centi- or Millipedes intobthe future.

There was this blueish looking centipede, but I forgot his name, that would be my first choice.
>>
I keep a few species of isopods that I've been able to find in my backyard. Mostly Porcellio scaber and Armadillidium vulgare, but I have found some Oniscus asellus.

I'd like to order some some different species in the future along with some sort of roach.
>>
I'm terrified of centipedes but have considered getting one as a pet just to de-sensitize myself toward them. I remember getting apple snails for my aquarium and initially thinking they were spooky-looking water-aliums and thinking neocardina shrimp were like like water-cockroaches but over time they just became kawaii creatures roaming around and trying to live their lives. Maybe if I own a centipede I'll accept them as bros.

>squirrels keep taking pieces of fried chicken from trash cans in the neighborhood
>drop them from the tree in my yard
>have to keep chasing my beagle around the yard and forcefully taking them from her mouth so I don't have to pay for a vet visit
What the hell do I even do about this? They're not mine, I don't know whose trash they're coming from, and I can't do a sweep of my hard every time I let my dog out 10 times a day. Is there any sort of mesh/chicken wire I can put under the tree's branches that won't disrupt/endanger wildlife?

>>
Why would you need to pay for a vet visit if your dog is eating chicken bones?
>>
>>2194491
They can choke on them, they can perforate the dog's insides. All kinds of whacky shit can happen to a dog if they eat cooked bones, specially tiny chicken bones.

What if you made some sort of tray on the trunks of the trees to catch them in, OP?
>>
>>2194497
I was thinking of doing something similar to a suicide barrier under all the branches, but I don't want birds and stuff to get hurt on it. Tought I'd ask around first in case maybe someone's doing something similar before. The pieces of chicken/bones always fall in a roughly 5 foot radius around the trunk of the tree, and the tree is maybe 30 feet tall at most. It only happens every month or so, so just when I think the problem is gone it happens again.

where do you live?

Most edible mushrooms in north america need to be cooked in order for them to be safe to eat.

Very few mushrooms are edible in north america. Many edible mushrooms become toxic when their gills turn black.

I've got this friend who believes with the highest sincerity that sharks are mammals instead of fish. He constantly corrects me with his bullshit theory just by saying that some sharks give live birth. This is the only argument he uses. He doesn't search up information, doesn't give me evidence, he generally gives no backbone to his arguments.

My elderly cat has gotten a bit runned down lately, her fur is in bad condition and her has some sores and yellow looking splotches on her skin.
I bought her to the vet and he told me she was just too old.

Shes seventeen so I won't expect much but she seems fine, eats her food and spends most of the day snoozing in her favourite spot.

I am wondering if there is anything I can give her to improve her health, something to boost her energy level, improve her fur and skin.

Any ideas? Considering giving her a boiled egg now and then.
