Just give them pieces of deli meats. Cats are obligate carnivores and dogs are carnivores that can eat mild non-meat foods, so baked treats aren't actually good for them.

Isn't it better than giving the dog to a shelter? Life circumstances change, not everyone has the luxury of holding on to their dog no matter what happens in life.
>>
Well, there are known people who go on CL and get dogs for strange reasons; One ran a bestiality farm and two other would just take them, kill them, or torture them.

At least sending them to a shelter, you know they're going to die in a SOMEwhat peaceful manner.
>>
How much would you pay for an unspayed Australian Shepard from Craiglist from a family that is trying to get rid of the dog? $800 is ridiculous.

I just found a big ass False Tarantula outside on our wall. It looked like he was climbing towards the door for warmth.

So, my two roommates wanted to kill or move it away from the house, but I told them it would probably just come back for the warmth, so they let me get it into a gallon vase and put it out in the garage for the night.

I was going to buy a setup for a tarantula anyway, but is there any chance I could take care of this big boy instead? It's winter and going to be getting pretty chilly soon out in that garage, so not sure if I would need a heat source for it or if they hibernate? I'm looking up care sheets right now too, just wondering what your guys input on this is.

Good idea, bad idea, terrible idea? And, no, I'm not really interested in holding it.

I think it's a nice idea - I couldn't let a big spider freeze to death. On the other hand it survived pretty well so far. Sucks that they won't let you keep it inside the house.

Anyone have any experience with service dogs? All they all they're chocked up to be?

One of my relatives is going blind and he's thinking of getting a seeing eye dog. He prefers small dogs like Pugs and Shih Tzus but I don't think he'd mind a bigger one.

Elaborate pls.

Also a small breed is not going to work as a seeing dog.

I feel sorry for service dogs. Their lives are hell. All work, no fun. Very often their "owners" are ugly (personality-wise) people as well. Usually, they are Golden Retrievers, which makes matters even worse as they are literally angels on earth who did nothing to deserve this. FeelsBadMan

I meant "Is having a service dog worth it or is it just troublesome for the person and/or dog?"

I am aware only large dogs can be service dogs. That's what I said. He prefers small dogs but that won't do here.

"The 'world's saddest' polar bear is trapped in a tiny cage at a shopping mall in China"

http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-china-polar-bear-20161025-snap-story.html

The burgeoning animal rights movement in China may have found a poster child in Pizza, a forlorn-looking polar bear dubbed “the world’s saddest.”

At a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday, the Humane Society International presented a letter signed by 50 Chinese animal rights groups urging Guangzhou Gov. Zhu Xiaodan to close the city’s Grandview Mall Ocean World, where Pizza is among the 500 species exhibited in a shopping center, and secure a better home for the bear.

The groups join several international organizations — the Humane Society, Care2, the Born Free Foundation and the Animals Asia Foundation — that have collected more than a million petition signatures calling for action.

In China, activists have seized on the global attention to Pizza’s plight as an opportunity to raise public awareness about animal captivity in the country, which has yet to pass animal rights laws.

“Pizza is really not the saddest polar bear in the world,” said Hu Chunmei of the Chinese Green Development and Endangered Species Fund. “He reminds us of the many captive wild animals in China that are worse off.”

____________________________

I guess the story is supposed to be about the bear.

I am sharing it because it was news to me that the Chinese had any concept of animal rights whatsover.

Redpill me on dog care, /an/. I don't know a thing about dogs, so I don't know of good sources to get information from. Sorry in advance for such a big spoon-feeding request

What kind of food is best for them? What about homemade food instead of store-bought?
How do I train a dog for basic things like shitting outside and not jumping at people?
What are good tips to notice changes in their body language and whatnot? I've also read in some places that people more often than not pet or play with dog til they get over-excited, how can you prevent that?
I'm thinking of getting a galgo since I've discovered a galgo rescue here and would like to give one a proper home, any tips on those fellas?

Don't buy kibble with grains or fillers. A good mid range kibble is diamond natural or fromm family.

I like to supplement kibble with fatty foods and oils to keep a shiny coat, and yogurt to help digestion.

Don't be afraid to make corrections, be it using a spray bottle when they jump or a prong collar for obedience training. All positive training advocates are misguided, a balanced approach is best.

Reward calm behaviour if you want a calm dog. Reward for going to the washroom outside.

Buy a crate for emergencies. Research crate training but it isn't necessary for every dog.
>>
Well for your particular breed, I'd recommend a high quality kibble/wet mix for the time being. Its hard to concoct home-made staple for your animal until you're familiar with their complete nutritional needs, that's definitely more involved than any few recipes or posts.

Rather than rough or exciting play you should be ready for long fetch sessions and plenty of running.
As far as house-training it all depends on the individual, if you've got a neglected animal it complicates things greatly. Its good that you're going to be observing behavior closely, but be aware that a dog may approach you with a message then become distracted themselves and bring you a toy/want to play/start scratching/etc , though in general I've taken most behavior that I cannot immediately explain to be indication that something needs to happen soon, ill start with a let-out, check food (some like to only feed at certain times, but I personally feed high-energy breeds whenever they want to keep their stomach acid under control) refresh water (you can never do this too much). If there is problematic behavior it ends up usually resting in those areas. A dog that gets enough play and outside time will rarely go in the house once they map their yard (running channels, play areas, and bathroom area are usually kept separate so make sure they can access their typical bathroom area)
You will probably find more information searching for greyhound care rather than galgo, at least if you typically frequent English websites.
There is quite a bit to dog care but to me those are some of the basics. If you want to communicate verbally, tone is everything. Speaking low and harshly will mimic a growl and they will get the message first , then listen for words. Same goes for high , encouraging tones. Body language counts so don't be afraid to exaggerate movements.Once they are used to that then they start picking up on words themselves, in my experience.
Hope this helps

I will travel very often, to many different areas. I want to explore nature and I want to explore different cultures. I plan to do these things while I have the chance to and am not tied down with a house, family, or fixed location career.

I want a dog, a partner who I could take on these adventures. A dog with the constitution to handle hours of exertion in environments ranging from hikes in the snowy mountains of Switzerland to the humid jungles of El Salvador.

A dog with the intelligence to allow it to be trained well.

There are evil people in the world. Considering that I hope to travel to many different areas, where I'll be exposed to many different kinds of people, not all of which who would be adverse to hurting me. A dog with the physical strength to defend itself, and myself or loved ones in the case of an attack.

The dog must also be a good family dog. I don't plan on adventuring for life and I don't plan on just getting rid of the dog once I'm done with my world travels. I want a dog that can love and protect my children as they are born and grow up.

I know this is a very specific kind of dog I'm looking for and I know a lot of it is up to proper training as well.

I've always been a cat owner and for the past few years have really been wanting a dog. Right now it feels like the perfect time in my life to get a dog.

I recently started my search and as of now I'm thinking either German Sheperd or Rhodesian Ridgeback. Possibly a Labrador Retriever. What are your guys thoughts on this?

Is it OK to resent an animal for having a bad personality? I mean. I swear some of them are just "bad" animals like my cat that finally got put down. Fuck that cat I'm glad its dead lol. It was a bad cat.

Sure but if you raised it yourself it's your fault if it's got a "bad personality". Do some basic research before getting a puppy/kitten and it won't grow up to be neurotic.

Looks about what you said, and he could just be wrinkly cause he's a puppy with loose skin.

Either way, prep yourself for what the worst of those breeds have to offer. He could be a really great dog, but he could have also inherited most of the bad traits, so just get ready in advance.

I can't get my parent's dog to stop pulling/lunging on a leash. I recently bought a lead collar I'm trying to get her to get used to but she changes from 'YAY WALK' to 'GET THIS THING OFF ME' every two seconds.

I've leashed trained a lot of dogs but she's very stubborn/too excited. Any 'problem' she had was solved from tiring her out, exercise and whatnot but I can't tire her out enough to not get so excited about walks even if I'm just doing it in the backyard. This is even after running around with her for two hours and she drops. She has perfect recall. When she is pulling, telling her to stop and she will either sit or lay down. But as soon as you take another step, there she goes again. So here I am taking one step, she pulls, tell her to stop, she stops, take another step, she pulls, repeats, etc. Right now I'm stuck at that. She also developed a new thing, where if lying down, she does thing where instead of pulling, she just crawls along the ground. She can go across the whole yard like this, but if she's on all fours she just pulls. I am sure prong collars/choke chains would kill her, since she chokes herself out with normal collars.

What else can I do? How do I get her to accept the lead better? I don't feel like I can even give her treats for not pawing at it, since she switches from leaving it/to giving it hell too fast to reinforce. I keep her on a short leash at my side, turn back, don't let her sniff things/go where she wants until she's calm, etc. Wonderful dog, good with people, good with other dogs, perfect recall/commands in the house/yard and I'd really like to walk her more but I'm having trouble hammering leash manners into her.

What I did, was when my dog pulls I walk and pull him back a few meters and make him sit right next to me and then continue walking. I keep doing that everytime he pulls till he learns that if he pulls, we won't be going anywhere. I saw this on TV and it works. My dog stopped doing that after I did this. If that doesn't work, get a head collar, when your dog pulls, his head will be pulled too and it'll make him stop. Also, if your dog tries to remove the head collar make sure he doesn't. Pull on that fucker.
>>
>>2257169
>I recently bought a lead collar I'm trying to get her to get used to but she changes from 'YAY WALK' to 'GET THIS THING OFF ME' every two seconds.
Did you actually READ THE FUCKING MANUAL that comes with those?
>>
>>2257177
I have tried that many times with a normal collar. Worked all the time with any other dogs I've walked with, many a dogs not my own. Ive even tried refusing to leave the property with this dog or just in the yard. The other dogs learned that just seeing a leash doesn't mean we are going for a walk(when leash training in the yard) but even in just in the backyard this dog thinks we are going on a magical LSD adventure.

I did just buy this lead collar today. I've tried three times with it. A total of two hours with trying to keep it on her. Which is nothing, really. I pull, make her sit, she sits, but when she gets up she goes fucking nuts trying to get it off. I give her treats when sitting nice with it. If a leash is in view she seems to accept longer than just having it on. Do I just keep doing this? From what I imagine what may go on in her head when I say sit, stop, lay down, etc that's it. She freezes. But as soon as she gets up again it's back to whatever.

>>2257183
Didn't have one but I did look it up beforehand. This is not so much 'how do I lead collar' but also advice on how to deal with a dog so excited she can barely contain herself. My parents have a large yard, my family plays with her, I do when I'm here, etc. You can tire her out until she drops but once on a walk she is overcharged. It's not my dog and i don't live here, but they want to be able to walk her more easily. I want to help and also learn in case I come across this again.

got this guy from the grocers, leaves are absolutely delicious, i am sure basil plants are gonna be the mainstream meme that will be cool to hate one day

but seriously, how do i be a good caretaker and ensure its health and vitality so that I can continue eating its leaves? This basil is my first house plant and it was fully leafy and in complete bloom when I first bought it, I clipped some leaves for a single dinner, left it for 3 days, and it starts to wilt. Roommate suggested that I clip all the wilted leaves and clip the big ones that weigh down the stems.

pic related is my basil now after I clipped all the shrunken wilted bits and took most of the big good leaves.

Help?

I really dont know what to do /an/

My two dogs were outside in the yard doing their buisness, and I guess my older mixed breed found something to eat on the ground. My Aussie came over and let out the most frightening growl I had ever heard. She latched onto my mix's neck and kept shaking her. I grabbed my Aussie's collar and tried to pull her off, but she wouldn't let go. Then I tried hitting her on the head until finally she let go. As I pulled her head up she growled loud again. There was blood all over her mouth, and it smelled awful. My mix had blood all over her neck
Luckily I don't think my mix had any deep cuts, but Im watching her.
What should I do?
