Collected our kitten on Thursday night, he was extremely timid for the first night, howling and hiding under the sofa.

Two days later he is cuddling with us, following us and responding to him name. He's very, very affectionate, rubbing against us to scent us and giving us kitten kisses if we let him get close enough.

One thing that concerns me is that he meows all the time when he isn't sleeping. When he wakes up, he meows loudly as though to tell us he is awake. If he's walking around the room, he always meows loudly and he does the same while eating or going to the toilet.

He's a bengal/ragdoll kitten and you can see both breeds so clearly in him (particularly his bengal meow).

Is this normal for a new kitten?

>Bengal/ragdoll
So what you mean to say is it's a moggy and you're a special snowflake
>>
has he been checked out by the vet?

that's not really normal, but all kittens are different. how old is he? he's likely meowing because he's still very young so he's calling out so his mother knows where he is. insecure kittens tend to meow a lot, or he could just be talkative.

There's a small falcon in my backyard that's eyeing my pet bird that's locked in a cage. How do I domesticate that majestic creature without sacrificing my bird?

This is what it kind of looks like

You mean "tame". "Domesticate" means something else.
>>
>>2257563
Whatever you are trying to do is illegal and fucked up.
Also you cannot tame a wild animal. Few retarded kid succeeds at that, it would end in tragedy.
>>
>>2257563
Just do the same thing Hiccup did in How to train your dragon. Shoot him and go pick him up in the forest. Then breed him and after a few generations of artificial selection you'll have a new domesticated species.

Here's my thoughts on it:
- most critical endangered species will probably go extinct, a small percentage might recover
- same with endangered and threatened species, but more might recover
- non-native species will play a major role in future ecosystems, a few might be removed
- most near threatened species will do fine, but some will probably become endangered as well, possibly even end up extinct
- non-threatened species will do fine, a tiny minority not
- some native species will also expand and adapt to new environments, at the same time some do the opposite - climate change will play a role in this

In general:
- no ecosystem will be trully original (implying those are still around), it will have lost species and gained species, the composistion will be totally different (more species x, less species y) species will also be genetically different
- there will be homogenization, but not as severe as some ecologists are implying, partly because of rapid evolution

This is my optimistic forecast. I'm assuming that humans will do fine, if humans don't it could have both negative effects (the Haïti or Congo scenario) or positive effects (the Chernobyl scenario).

Who cares, most of the endangered or extinct animals failed to adapt to a changing habitat; there aren't very many cases where humans took it upon themselves to genocide a species, it's not like we're responsible for every single living creature on this planet.

Once we get VR technology to the masses, we won't even need zoos or the animals themselves anymore, they'll all be preserved forever, digitally, and we won't have to have stupid save the pandas campaign and the only animals left will be the ones that successfully adapted, or the ones we breed for companionship, food, or scientific experimentation, the way god intended it to be.
>>
>>2257535
Domestic cats will fill every single niche in the ecosystem. People will all die from toxoplasmosis.
>>

Nowhere in the post did I make a value judgement whatever it was bad or not. That was you.
I'll tell you this: I don't care about every single species. For these reasons:
1) I simply don't like and value some species
2) The species has many species like it (I wouldn't mind a few dragonflies going extinct, if there's still plenty species of dragonflies around)
3) Mass-extinctions can happen regardless of humans
4) Extinction means opportunities for other species to flourish and evolve

On the other hand what I would find depressing:
1) A very low biodiversity world or very low complexity natural world
2) Unique species going extinct, those species without any or few relatives, once you lose them they are forever gone (consider it a heritage)
3) The species I do value, going extinct
4) Species that have a long track record for surviving, such as crocodiles and horseshoe crabs (I dunno why but it makes me sad when I think about it)

Also, if you are a Christian you would know that God gave humans a duty to care for the natural world. It was only later that Christians adopted the view that nature was something to be overcome.

Anyway I do care, but it's a mixed bag. If I were a Christian I would actually hold a much more depressing view, because with evolution you have some prospect for the future. I have not heard of the possiblity of God creating anything new, which evolution will eventually do.

The trouble with evolution of course, is that it can take extremely long for new species to become. You won't suddenly have very distinct new species in my lifetime.

Out of all the reptiles I've come across Green Iguanas are the worst. They're incredibly pissy animals that require and insane amount of husbandry. They're an alien species where I come from and out compete the Blue Iguanas (an endangered species). Asshole iguanas will dominate your yard if you let them and will pretty much turn it into a hot spot for the bastards to congregate, not to mention when they're in droves they'll completely destroy your garden. Fortunately the government has said year round hunting for them is ok and they actual taste pretty good when served with curry sauce.

>Green Iguanas are the worst

People who think green iguanas can be kept as pets in a 2 room apartment are actually the worst.
>>
>>2256756
>Blue Iguanas
Bet they have the same ecological niche as the green iguana, who cares.
If the green iguanas are outcompeting something as rare as the solenodon: that is more signficant.

But just by looking at Wikipedia it aren't even the green iguanas making them endangered. At least get it right.

But desu, I'll give it to you the blue iguana is much prettier.

quicksand is a non-newtonian fluid

that's just normal sand flowing through a hopper or something

the birds were likely crushed

proof that those male chicks that go through the grinder at the sexing factory probably don't suffer too much trauma

Here's the thing: I don't feed my dog, I barely spend my day at home (other people are here though, it's not he's going to die from negligence so shut up), I'm not the one who changes his water, etc. Everything that's absolutely necessary for him to live, I'm not the one who does it.

Why does he love me? He's literally sleeping on my lap right now.

Why don't dogs understand the concept of sacrifice? If you think about it, sacrifice is one of the key essential traits of Man; the ability to reason that it is worthwhile to give, presently, time or effort in exchange for some reward in the future. But try telling that proposition to a dog? Good luck, because the only thing dogs understand is, "BONE NOW."

a dog will spend a week digging a hole under a fence
>>
>>2259220
Wew lad, is it now you realise dogs are not humans?

>>2259245
No, a dog will try to dig a hole. Then everyday it'll come by the hole again, see it, think of digging again and likely do it. It's not just "I'll just dig here for a week" once and keeping to it.

Is there any definitive reason why cats are so affectionate when you're on the shitter?

Two of my cats in particular are like this. They're not usually the types to come over and sit on your lap, apart from when I'm on the toilet. I'd guess it has something to do with the confined space but even when the doors are wide open they're the same.

They're cats. They aren't affectioate.

As to why they like the smell of your shit, who knows. They're smelly animals, maybe that's why.

I got this guy today, set up the tank and all as I was told but he won't eat. I'm going to get a thermometer tomorrow to check the temp but if it's in the correct range and he stuff refuses to eat, I'm probably going to cut him loose in the highway and let him play Frogger.

I don't think getting a frog was all that great an idea.

Are you retarded? You never let an animal like that loose into the wild! That's rule fucking one!

If you get rid of him you sell him off or give him to an animal shelter or exotic animal shelter or you give/sell it to the pet shop or other ones.

Grow the fuck up

Why does no one give a shit about pic related? They aren't even obscure. Hyenas are cool and all but I never see these guys mentioned anywhere. They are way more successful at hunting than any other pack animals. Less than 5k of them left. Do any zoos have them?

Only two downside is while spotted hyenas and lions can survive long enough near each other, lions tend to destroy african wild dog packs. Anyone know why that is? Do they stand and fight? They could easily outrun lions so I assume they mob lions and get fatally wounded even if they survive the attempt.

Also this could also be a general thread for non wolves and normal ass foxes. Maned wolves, crab eating foxes, etc fine though.Or more obscure predators in general. I don't really care.
>>
Fuckloads of zoos have them, there was even that story a few years ago where some idiot dropped a kid in with some, with predictable results. I think you'll find a lot of people are heavily interested in african hunting dogs.
>>
>>2258795
>Anyone know why that is?
wild dogs are barely the size of whippets

spotted hyenas are massive alsatians
>hence why lions are afraid of them
