Hello /an/, I come here because I'm desperate. My pug had what I believe was a stroke... twice with a few minutes in between, it happened while we were asleep. All vet clinics are closed right now and the wait is killing me.
Its been 2 hours since and he seems to have blurry vision after it happened but other than that he seems ok.
I'm scared shitless it happens again and the wait for the vet to open is killing me. What can I do? Any advice? Please I'm desperate...

In humans once you see stroke symptoms time is brain tissue. There's special medication (TPA) that can help reduce the impact, but it must be given in a small window of time (a few hours from the onset of symptoms), and you must be a candidate (ex. not on blood thinners or super high BP).

I have no idea what's available for animals, but my guess is not much.
I would take it to the vet asap. Provide comfort and safety measures. Keep it from moving around too much, and try to encourage it to drink lots of water to increase its bp. In the hospital environment for humans we usually want to keep the bp high to promote perfussion to the brain. Fluids is away to raise bp, but I doubt the dog will drink much. Make sure also to keep the dog in a quiet comfortable environment; decrease stimulation.

Be aware of any weakness, swallowing difficulties, vision issues, cognitive functioning, etc.

His only deficit may just be his eye sight. It's possible he could have had a TIA (if that exists in dogs). His symptoms may improve.

Just please take him to the vet when they open
>>
>>2293782
I was doing research and it seems to have indeed been a TIA. He drank a lot of water too so that's comforting in a way. I'm heading to the bet in a few minutes, they open at 8am and its 7am where I am.
He is resting now and I'm vigilant in case anything happens.
>>
Whoever had the idea of making vet clinics closed on the weekends? Like retail, there should be people working on the weekends, because time doesn't stop on the weekends: everyone still has needs.

And in this case it's the animals who have needs. I've seen so many threads (been lurking here for years) where shit happens on the weekend and the owner of the pet is basically fucked and it really hurts to see.

Hi /an/.
I just got a kitten out of nowhere as a late Christmas present.
I have a dog, who is cool with the kitten, but the cat is the complete opposite, so he's confined to staying in my room (I live with my parents).
I play video games as a hobby and now I'm being punished for my poor cable management as my cat takes every opportunity to bite/claw at cords underneath my desk.
I want to keep him, but at this rate all my electronics are gonna be kaput. I'm having to ward him off even as I'm writing this.
I have past experience with cats, but never with one this young with a dog around, and at that all my previous cats have been pretty calm and not destructive, mainly because they came and went out of the house because I live in a rural area.
I need some advice because I've never had to deal with this kind of behavior from a pet, aside from when my dog was a pup, and he wasn't even this bad.

p.s
His name is Pickles

p.p.s I'll be using that name to post here.

Doge bump
>>
>>2293751

Perhaps try bitter citrus spray on the cables. Cats usually, USUALLY don't like the taste. I've heard of a few that go crazy for it, though.

No need to bump, matey. /an/ is one of the slowest boards.
>>
>>2293813
Thanks, I'll try it.
I still have some bitter cherry stuff that we have leftover from when the dog was a pup, it never seemed to work with him though. He did eventually stop however.

Do you think guide dogs "suffer"?

I've been following a guide dog page for a while and they seem perfectly normal and happy, but there was this vegan guy (no surprise there) who left a 1 star review saying these dogs have a horrible life and suffer all of it.

Now I don't trust veganazis but I did search how they are raised and the worst part seems to be that they are taken away from their first "family" (the one that socializes them) after a year or so. They also say their instincts are "suppressed" so they are 100% calmed and obedient... But since they're genetically selected to behave this way more easily, I don't see the problem there.

Anyway, I would like to read your opinions, better yet if you have experience with these dogs.

My brother had a service dog because he was physically disabled, not blind. The dog was sweet and obedient but he did often seem bored and lonely.

I started spending about an hour every day to play with him like a normal dog and he really started perking up after that. He still did all of his normal duties and didn't let his training slip but he moped around and sighed less. I know a lot of service dogs don't get that which is sad
>>
>>2293702
I live across the street from a guide dog academy, and walk with the trainers often. One of the things most opponents won't say (because they are against all forms of pet ownership under the PETA rubric, and are mildly insane), is that the majority of dogs that start the training flunk out long before their final exam. And since most guide dogs are retrievers, the flunk outs tend to exhibit breed characteristics that make them more excellent field dogs, or family dogs, which they usually become.

So the dogs that graduate are entirely the dogs best naturally suited to do the job. Their disposition to imprint their humans and devote themselves is the highest motivation for them, and they love their job. The MRI Dog project at Emory is bearing this out, and the Peter Singer types are really pissed about it, because it gives dogs a special status among animals.
>>
>>2293702
yeah we have a program at my university. person socializes them for a year, and then they get sent to the patient.

I don't think they have it that bad, but sometimes you can see the ones in training that really want to just run around a play, and try so hard to suppress it because they know it would be considered bad. it's a little sad

Hey /an/, I just met a guy with the most well-trained dog ever, it would never bark and followed his every command. He told me his secret was kicking the dog when training him, do you think its justified or is it animal cruelty?
28 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
no I don't think so, I mean I wouldn't personally kick my doggo but it's not the worst thing in the world, if animals communicate with one another and set boundries physically why can't humans do it too
>>
All training is animal cruelty. This man did nothing wrong.
>>
What do you mean by kicking? Like, a real painful kick or just a little soft kick?

Ahhh another morning gone by...
Fresh air, birds singing, the aroma of the days freshest coffee scenting my car on my morning commute, and a plethora of dead cats pancaked into the road along the way. Some with collars and some without.
Explain yourselves, catfags. Why do you want your favorite animal to die like this so frequently? Why are you in denial about this? Why do you think YOUR cat won't be run over? Why are you so negligent? Why do you hate your own pets this much?

Cats are awesome, but forcing them to live inside when they clearly want outside with all of their being is fucking cruel. If it's too stupid to live a day, then fuck. and don't try running that high horse "Oh, but you're supposed to be the intelligent caregiver and keep it safe". Fuck off.

I don't think "high horse" is the right term for this. It's completely reasonable to expect people to be held accountable for the deaths of these pets instead of "OMG HOE COULD THIS HAPPEN??! ONLY GOD CAN JUGE ME" mentality. Take your cat for a walk, put them in a baby carriage or >>2294240

Trap, neuter, and return. That's the best you can offer to them if they are older then 6-9months.

You can contact local animal shelters/rescues, and see if they can help you out.

It's nice you are feeding them. If you can provide them with shelter then that would be even better. Check out some DIY feral cat shelters.
>>
>>2293058
This, helping the shelter trap and neuter is the good long-term solution.

Short-term: styrofoam shelters on some wood blocks for elevation with cheap blankets from goodwill. Tractor supply Co has good cheap bulk cat food. Water source is a must, it's the most important, since cats might overwise resort to drinking antifreeze puddles and other dangerous stuff. This is even more important than food.

What is it like owning goats?

I'd like to own some one day but it seems like a big investment. I'd like milk and cheese.

Is goat's milk good? The cheese is dank but I don't think I've actually had the cheese...

Bruddy good. Fun, entertaining animals but they're escape artists.
Also be prepared for a high mortality rate especially if you're just picking up random goats. My cousin goes through goats and sheep like tissues because she picks up any she finds. Mostly the youngins. Any full grown adults(2+ years) have been fine but she has shit luck with the younger ones even though they're passed weaning. They do go to the vet for any and all treatment they need, but she's had about five die this year.

Its not just her but in general you find out that you WILL come across health problems. Stillborns are also common. With that said I'm not familiar with dairy goats, though. But goat milk is fucking amazing. Way better than cow milk and doesn't leave that slimy aftertaste cow milk does.

Turn off all the lights inside the house. Turn on one on the outside. Close the door when those fckers get out. Or you could just burn your house down. The last one saves you from cleaning their wings that will eventually fall down and creating mess everywhere.

Fun fact: They usually means rainy season is on the way.

No badgers here and I don't believe it's a river otter , nasals are too wide for a raccoon so I'm still going to go with a fisher. Maybe skunk. Mustelid skulls are hard to tell apart sometimes but the mustelids I know we have are
