cat in our house meows/"talks" at me fucking loudly whenever it sees me like it wants something. and if i approach to talk at it or pet it, 9/10 times she will run off to her food bowl and start eating like OH I JUST REMEMBERED I AM HUNGRY

not even my cat, doesn't talk at/to or do this weird crap to anyone else. thoughts?

>not my cat
"look, I eat food, and it's not for you" = territorial
or "look, I calmly eat food in your presence" = attention whoring
The cat is clearly food driven. But do you think domesticated social mammals have some genetic unicode of behavior especially if (like in the case of cats) nobody really cared to breed them for that? They get that from their mother and also owner's socialization or the lack of it. Not even anthropomorphizing. If it's not fixed, if there are another cats around, even just behind the windows, could be the first. But as it's a she, is she fixed again? was she weened to early? could be the second. If it was a stray, could be both.
>>
>>2294409
not a stray, we got 2 cats and a dog, other cat and dog get on well, weird eating cat (who is actually the tiniest of the lot) was kinda taken from mom kinda early we suspect, got it at some big pet store chain i don't know. doesn't talk at/do the weird food thing with anything else. also she follows me into/out of rooms and everyone else claims it's just me she does that to. never really getting close but keeping an eye on me. am i going to die soon?

out of what you said i would lean more towards attention whoring but unless she has an itch she cant reach she doesn't really get needy for petting or anything
>>
>>2294395
Cat is just trying to get your attention. I have a cat that's pretty vocal, but that's mostly my fault because I talked to her all the time as a kitten and it finds it normal (inb4 toxoplasmosis taking over my brain). When she does it, it means that she's either hungry, greeting me or wants to play.

Spend more time with this "not my cat" of yours, it's probably bored out of its skull and will start doing somersaults around the house and claw/chew your furniture. Or at least get it some toys like in that gif.

I love nature and I love music.

Recently I've been wondering if there is a way to combine the too, and obtain a job that jas something to do with field recording or bird song research.

What would I need to study/do in order to realise such aspirations?

You'd need a masters or a phd if you want it to be permanent. Aim for Cornell.

Maybe, silly sounding question.
Is it possible to make from real bird songs and calls the "voices" of hypothetical birds of the future? I have a project "Tour to Neocene" about the world 25 MY in the future (inspired by Dougal Dixon's works and "The Future is Wild" TV series). And I'd love to add certain "voices" to descriptions of non-existing birds.
But it's not a job, but a hobby. All people working on this project do it for their own interest only. I think all of us would be glad if you'd join our work.

This may be an odd thread, but I don't really know where else I would ask this question.

As I'm entering my mid 20s and the grim reality of my uncertain future is slowly approaching, I remembered something I heard back when I was a dived with my uncle. I recall that lionfish hunting is a very real thing in places like southeastern U.S. and the Mediterranean. Is this occupation actually something you could live off of, or is it more of a recreational activity that you just happen to get some money for? I know it would have to cover the cost of your diving equipment/fuel costs, but is it enough standalone?

>>
I believe because they aren't good eatin' and are an invasive species, there is simply no laws preventing hunting lionfish. I do not believe there is any financial reward for them, and will indeed cost you a lot of money and perhaps your life if you're not careful.

tl;dr
get a job m8
>>
>>2294383
>you just happen to get some money for?
Not even that anymore. Lionfish breed so quickly that funds got depleted and discontinued pretty quick. For short periods of the year, like a week or less, some places will have a $100 bounty.

Otherwise, I think the only places that still have a continuous bounty only offer $5 an intact fish. That's less than a tank of air and you may only see 1 to 15 fish a dive. Average is maybe 3.

Tl;dr if you could live off it, I'd be doing it.

That's a damn shame. Thanks for the replies, it was worth a shot.

I think my dog has pyometra. Before i'm accused of neglect i'd like to say that 1 i dont have the funds to get her spayed, and 2 that she's a family dog and my father didnt want her spayed earlier because of breeding and 3 i dont have a ride, or the funds to get this surgery. Believe me, i've been wanting to take her to the vetfor the longest.

Im 80% positive my dog has pyometra, the symptoms have been constant bleeding, a blood+pus mixture, and really foul smelling discharge. Im really worried about this, and she's been bleeding way too much. How long could she have until sepsis, and what can i do to slow that down?
12 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
You give her up to the shelter ASAP since you don't have the money.
>>
>>2294288
I don't, my father does. Aversion has been the cause of this problem, not money. She's a family dog, and the problem is he doesnt care about her that much, and its 2:30AM. We've been told that he'lk take her later on today, so i'm waiting on that.
>>
>>2294291
Then that's all you can do. If he doesn't, you can call the shelter and/or animal control first thing in the morning to explain the situation. They will likely come out to pick the dog up.

/an/on, remember to tell your pets you love them.
I just lost my dog I grew up with for 12 years yesterday. We had to put him down because he was dying from a massive blood boil that was going into his intestinal tract. How do you guys cope with the loss of a beloved pet? How long does the pain last? ;_;

My deepest sympathy and condolences, he looks like an absolute cutie. I'm sure you gave him the life you could and part of that was putting him down before he was in real pain, and (whether or not you believe in the afterlife) he's not suffering anymore. Take solace in the fact that the pain won't last forever, the wound of his passing is fresh so of course it's going to hurt bad but you'll get through it because he isn't really gone, he'll always be there in your heart.

Is there any way to teach a cat to clean itself? The cat i adopted was seperated from his mom at a young age and never learned at least thats what they told me. He smells so fucking bad please
Am i gonna have to start giving him baths

Give these links a look, they might have some tips you'll find useful:
http://www.animalplanet.com/pets/healthy-pets/cat-not-grooming-itself/
https://www.petcarerx.com/article/my-cats-not-grooming/800

If you do choose to give you kitty a bath you'll want to be very careful, most cats don't take to water well and a scared cat with sharp claws isn't a fun mix. Some bathing tips I can give are filling up the tub without the cat in the room, the loud sound of water pouring will scare the cat. Make sure the water is warm but not too hot, the tub isn't filled so high that the cat is gonna be up to its neck in water/going to have to swim and put a towel or bath mat down in the tub so it has something to hold onto. Offer him treats and be very gentle, you want him to associate bath time with as much positivity as you can (and maybe trim his claws beforehand just in case haha). Best of luck!
>>
If it smells 'so fucking bad' it could be something other than it just doesn't kick itself. Is his ass clean? Check the inside of its ears and inside of the mouth. Look for build up, rotten teeth, anything that looks dirty and smell it since it might be coming from a specific part of him rather than overall. Cat breath is stinky by default but an infectious smell is pretty noticeable and different.

Unless he has shit caked in his fur or is rolling around in his litterbox, a cat that just doesn't groom has no reason to smell like that. I've had some ancient cats that stopped grooming and at worst they got that 'clothes you put in the closet for years and never touched' smell.

Well, we weren't gonna keep her alive at her expense. She had stopped eating and we were trying to figure out what's wrong. Eventually figured it either leukemia or tumor internally. She was given prednisone and improved for 2 days, then crashed hard so it was time. Its hard not to fall apart everytime I see a picture, or go by where she laid. Constantly want to wander by and pet her and them remember she is gone.

I've been here on /an/ many, many times over the years. I am VERY interested in knowing why it seems like nobody here ever really talks about guinea pigs. Have I just managed to miss the discussion?

I consider their noises very endearing. I love how when I'm visiting my friends that I can rustle a plastic bag and have them come over scurrying and begging for food. I love handling them and having them nibbling on my clothes, the only downside is that they can shed enough hair to make you think you rubbed your shirt on a full-grown dog, not a footlong pigger.

How do I get my dog interested in playing with toys? I have a 7 year old lab who is not interested in any non-consumable toys. He'll chew on one for a little bit, but will lose interest. He won't chew on furniture while we're gone ( he just sleeps while we're at work) but I feel like he's bored and I want him to play with toys while we're away.

Are there some good puzzle toys you'd recommend? I just have the rolling treat dispenser.

OP here. Does your dog's face look something like this? Sorry for the sideways pic.
>>
Antlers last a long time if he really enjoys chewing. If he's a marathon chewer and not a "bite as hard as I can" chewer, those would be perfect. Have him try a split one so he gets the idea--my dog didn't understand there was marrow in them the first time so it took him a while to get it.

You could also freeze some treats in broth in an ice tray if you're ok with your floor getting temporarily wet. He'll lick it all up.

If you're dead set on really puzzling his brain you could shell out $300+ for a Cleverpet

I had a cat when I was younger, best cat in the world. Unfortunately I became allergic to her in my early 20s, and gave her over to my parents to take care of. She died over a year ago from cancer at age 15.

I've really been missing the presence of a feline companion these days, and really want to get a cat, but it has to be at least somewhat hypoallergenic, or less bad than normal cats. Anyone else in my same situation have a cat that doesn't make your allergies flare up too much?

Hard mode: Would like a cat with long fur, not interested in hairless/short hair breeds. Supposedly most of the allergy comes from their saliva and not their dander, anyway.

petMD lists the Siberian Forest Cat (pictured) as one such long-haired option, anyone have experience with them?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Alright anon listen up

what causes allergic reactions to cats is not their fur. It does not matter if a cat has long or short fur. Or even a hairless cat. Doesn't matter. What causes reactions is a protein in their saliva. And not all cats have the same level, some have a fuckton, some have so little that they trigger minor or no reactions. And the gene that controls this is quite a mystery still. Even cats from the same litter can have drastically different production levels of this in their saliva. And the levels that the parents produce seem to have no effect on the offspring.

the only evidence that certain breeds of cat produce less allergens is anecdotal and not that reliable. I do remember a study that supposedly showed a breed of cat to produce less (oriental shorthair I think?), but it was also the breedclub of that cat that was behind it, so there is a conflict of interest to say the least and not the best info to go by

so, if you want a cat to not trigger your allergies, you have to just meet adult cats and see if you have a reaction. Kittens are a no-go since kittens are known to typically produce less of the allergen when they're young, then more when they grow up. So you wouldn't know if they really are okay with your allergies until they've grown up

Good luck OP

Exposure can reduce your symptoms. I discovered I was pretty allergic to cats when I volunteered at my local animal shelter to the point where I wanted to rip my face off. I took some over the counter allergy meds like zyrtec and continued going once a week. After about a year I forgot to take it and noticed it wasn't any where near as bad as it used to be. Now I still get some symptoms when brushing the cat I adopted but nothing a quick face wash doesn't fix.

I've heard the allergy claim before on Animal Planet but I don't know if it is really reliable or not.

I've been thinking about this. When a animal rescues it's owner, it's not doing it to be a hero and it's not being brave either. It's motivation is purely on it's own survival. The dog who run's into a flaming house to rescue it's owner does this because the owner is the dog's only source of food and care, and the dog know's that without it's owner, it will die. It's not a hero.
