Dog Food Advisor:

Last one reached its limit so let's get another one going.

I just have a question about breeders. Have any of you tried to be a breeder, or are any of you breeders currently?
Have you backyard bred or genuinely tried to improve the breed you were working with?
I'm on my way to try and become a hobby breeder, which involves becoming included in showing and taking the necessary health tests to ensure my dam is decent breeding material, then doing background/pedigree checks with whomever she'll breed to. That way I'm not breeding her to her brother or some shit.
I just want to know if anyone else has taken interest in the sport on /an/ aside from myself or ever even considered it, because let's face it, it's dying.
No one appreciates breeders anymore and because of that lines are dying out and certain breeds are already becoming endangered.

Thoughts?

Never thought about that , I just like to have a doggo as my companion.

Good luck with your hobby ,anon. Seems to be a hard thing to accomplish.
>>
Just in my experience for dealing with a variety of breeders, hobbyists have tended to be the best because they aren't trying to making a living off of their dogs, it's a labor of love more than anything

That said all the good ones I've dealt with have basically been rich people with a lot of time on their hands so hopefully you've got a huge property and trust fund OP

Is it normal for a dog to be this chill when another animal's guts are on the ground right in front of him?

Eat.

Your dog doesn't generally hop on the counter and freak out while you're eating, does it? It's a hunting dog. Of course it's trained not to maul and devour everything.

My roommate of 8 years moved out today and took the dog with him. I haven't lived in a house without a dog for about 12 years now, so things seem very lonely and quiet.

But I've never actually owned and been wholly responsible for my own dog. What are the important things to answer to myself before I commit to getting one?

Like, what's the average per month I should expect to spend? What are mistakes I should avoid? How do I keep it busy while I'm working?

General advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Get a breed with a similar energy level to you. If you are active and like walking/running/hiking get an energetic breed like a working dog. If you are lazy as balls get a dog that doesn't need exercise. Also be prepared to spend lots of time training it and just hanging out with it. You may have other friends but your dog has only you.

Uhhh what dog doesnt need exercise?

What are the advantages to have a dumb pet?
19 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2304702
They don't judge your musical taste.
>>
>>2304702
Define dumb.
Incapable of learning commands easily, simple and barely feeling like a cockroach, or people underestimate it because of stereotypes and misinterpretation?
>>
Kind of off topic but my gf and i went to a farm supply store once to get some tools, and they had live baby chicks for sale.

one bin had 'breeding chicks' or something of that nature, and they ran from our hands when we reached into try and pet them

another box just had 'meat birds' written on it, and they all ran towards our hands, assuming we were there to give them food.

I don't think I've laughed so hard in a store before, would definitely consider a meat bird as a pet.

Hey guys, I'm the one who posted asking about my YBS.
This is my new setup, personally, it looks dangerous concering the lighting, but this is temporary.
Also going to add sand or stones maybe and waiting for a bunch of duckweed to come.
Is there anything I should edit here? Rock position?
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2304685
I dont know what YBS is but this looks like a turtle pond. Maybe use some plywood and wood screws to secure the filter and the lamp. The stone slope looks a little steep. If it is a turtle pond you probably should add a UV lights it's good for the shell.
>>
>>2304685
That looks so shallow that the turtle can probably peek out the head while standing on all fours.
>>
>>2304693
YBS stands for Yellow bellied slider.
That is a UV light, and my turtle has climbed steeper rocks than that.
>>2304712
Living in less than 1500 square feet without a backyard, that's the best I can work with until summer when I can buy something bigger.
My turtle is only around 7-8 inches long.

I had a guy try to buy a ball python off of me and wanted to name her Drusilla. He was going to get her but then he and his gf told a 'hilarious' story about how their kid threw a turtle against the wall. They weren't sure if it was dead or not so they flushed it.

Also to add to the list, the names India and China. No one ever names their pets Canada, Kenya, Vietnam, etc. Usually theyre small dogs or fancy looking cats.

I had a cat named fluffy growing up. Otherwise the names I've given haven't been super common

>>
Those are equally made from deer bones. Cow bones would also work.
You can also use antlers. A popular choice is using deer and alligator mandibles.

Bone is more fragile than you might think so I wouldn't use them for any serious cutting but they look nice and people buy them. I've been meaning to make a folding knife out of small jaws.
>>
>>2304576
Oh yeah, I wouldn't use them they'd just be for show. I know a few people who would buy, too
Thank you, anon, cow will be very convenient for me

It's the first time I've cried properly in 3 years. I am student paramedic as well but some reason this got to me.

Yeah I Can relate to the whole situation because Over the years my mom moved on from father to father who she each built a relationship that lasted a couple years or so and basically had a kid with each one (I have five dads and four siblings, but Im hoping this dad is the last) because she has now matured because she is 30? But even so Im thankful for each and every one of my siblings and love them all equally and I just cant bring myself to hate my mom at all because I know what she did was for us to live a better life and she wanted that truly for all her kids but Im rambling so gtg

Got my girl a month ago at the pound, I'm thinking she's a Polish Hound Dog after learning about the breed. They only listed her as a hound/mix so I was looking for some opinions if she is one or just a perfect mutt please.

Hmm, while it's almost always just a mutt in threads like these, this one looks like it could actually be a Polish Hound. Could also just be a very similar mutt though. Maybe someone with more knowledge about the breed could say for sure.

posted in dog general but didn't get any input

my husky/pitbull (pic related) has ungodly amounts of energy. I can go on long runs with him and he's still running circles around me when we're done. And of course the extra energy he has makes it harder for him to focus on training and just not being a lil shit in general. So to burn off some of that extra energy I was thinking about getting into amateur agility training. Does anyone have experience with training their dog for this? If so, how did it go? and are the diys for agility equipment online any good or should I invest in the actual equipment I would buy online? I have 6 acres and storage space for stuff so that's not an issue

Thanks for the compliment and bump anon. He definitely is :)

And he's generally very well trained/behaved, but he doesn't give a single fuck about fetch and some days going on a run with him just isn't feasible so another means of tiring him out would be good. Plus since he's too smart for his own good figured he would enjoy ability.

pic of him as a lil pupper
