Can a birbologist help me figure out what this is? Taken in Northern Oregon on November 1st, last year. It's sitting on some brambles so it's not very big.

My best guess is sharp-shinned hawk? Probably too small for a Cooper's? If it is either it would be a young one right? Would there even be juveniles in early winter? Might be a rough-legged, I know nothing about them but in one very specific picture the eyes looked the same. This one has that "Egyptian hieroglyphic" style eye thing going on.

Sharp-shinned Hawk. They have tiny heads in comparison with Cooper's.

That bird is a few months old. They keep their brown first set of feathers until about April before starting to molt into their gray adult feathers.

Rough-legged is way, way bigger. About Red-tail size.
>>
>>2336561
Alright, cool, thanks. How can you tell his head is tiny? I guess it's hard to tell without them side by side. I've never seen a sharp-shinned up close, someone had told me they're about the size of Steller's Jays and can fit inside a soup can. I've seen Cooper's and I know they're decently large, but at this distance it's tough to judge size. How do they compare to kestrels?

I go to the spot this one was at pretty often so I hope I can see him again. I have seen a quick raptor type thing darting through some oaks I thought might be him but it was too fast to see well.
>>
>>2336574
Sharp-shinned Hawk heads are only about half the width of their shoulders. Cooper's Hawk heads are proportionally bigger and have a more blocky shape.

The size you were told on Sharp-shins is correct. Some small males aren't much bigger than a robin. They're about the same size as most kestrels.

In terms of length and wingspan Cooper's Hawks are 33 to 50% bigger than Sharp-shins and they weigh 3 times as much.

>Set up one of these to get rid of rat infestation under house
>catch rat
>consider killing with brick but can't bring myself to do it
>on way to hike plan to drop rat off on side of street in a riparian and oak woodland so at least it has a chance
>it somehow managed to get its head stuck between the tiny openings and it can't get it out
>i try to stuff its head back in with my shoe but its impossible hes stuck for good
>try to pull it out with its tail and its tail skin sloughs off revealing a bloody mess
>eventually just kick it in multiple times and its squeaking in pain and its eyes area bulging out fuck i'm so sorry
>is a fucking mess yet still alive while i shake it out of the cage and stomp it multiple times to finally end it
What the actual fuck? I went and got snap traps after this, less hassle for me and a hopefully a cleaner kill

Why am I not surprised?

1. You risked zoonosis by fucking with feral rats. Hope you don't get mites.
2. NATTURRRR doesn't mean that rat wasn't fucked the moment you set hands on it. That is to say, kill the fucking rat instead of pretending dropping a scared animal in the middle of foreign territory is anything good for it or will lead to anything besides death by local predator

I can only think of one thing. Is it a new tank? If so it may have not had enough time to establish a good bio film for them to graze on. Lots of plants help as well. Beside that I'm not too much of a help beside that the shrimp you're getting are severely inbred or bred in much different conditions.
>>
>>2336442
Well considering I don't have a lot of fish, and they don't eat very much, yea I'm willing to spend a bit. I'm going to look into bloodworms and similar stuff, but I was hoping for other high quality dry/bottled stuff that I could keep in the drawer and not have to worry about if my roommate is going to take it out of the freezer while he's high and rummaging around for food, then forget about it...

Hey,

My rat has lost a lot of weight, has been breathing heavily, and recently I discovered he lost one of his two incisors -- there's just a socket there.

He is urinating in large amounts at once, and he's terribly upset when I put him in his cage. His cage-mate died a few months ago of a large unknown growth inside all of his internal organs.

He's about 2-years old now -- my experience with multiple vets has been negative, they will take $250.00 from me just to inject the rat with some water under his skin, and say they can't do anything, or offer to euthanize the rat.

However, the last rat had a very complex problem to analyze -- what's wrong with this rat? Is it old age combined with a respiratory illness?

My question is how treatable is a respiratory ailment in rats? I keep him in a clean cage and I've been feeding him babyfood since he lost his tooth and to put some weight back on him.
I know he needs a cage-mate but I don't want a never-ending cycle of new rats when one dies.

Also the beer is empty, I know they can't have carbonated liquids

No idea, you need a vet who is an expert on rats.
Sounds realy bad.
>>

i'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow and have him put down if there's no treatment or optimism
>>
Sounds like you are doing the best you can. Maybe there are some recipies for sick and weakened rats on rathealthguide.

Dehydration can make him very weak. Do you see any signs of wasting on him?

>>

That's like saying "are animals right-handed."
>>
>>2336252
They do. They main not understand it like we do, but they are aware of death and recognize it.
>>
>>2336252
most humans don't understand death

animals would understand it better since they were never consciously alive in the first place, but things that aren't consciously alive don't understand things.

Hello /an/, I want to know if this snail has any possibility of surviving this much shell damage. I can see internal organs: what I assume is the heart beating. I don't want him to suffer so I think that I should euthanize him. I want to be sure there's nothing to be done first though.

Boil hard surface.
Let hard surface cool.
Glue hard surface to remainder of shell.
Snail keeps on snailing.
>>
>>2336110
Use an egg shell to cover it and keep it in a humid environment. As long as it doesn't dry out, it can heal. And clean it too using clean or sterile (better), water but don't use any chemicals. Chemicals contacting the broken area can kill it.

So a month or so back I adopted a wittle pitt. He finds a stray cat and instead of trying to eat or harm the cat he just brings it to my attention.
I allow cat to come in to eat and calm down. Cat is pretty chill "Fuck it why not". Cat's name is MoMo because Avatar.
This mother fucking morning.
I've got 7 kittens next to my head. Adorable little fuckers really but I'm actually a bit concerned. It doesn't seems that they can nurse so I went out and bought some milk replacement but I'm a retard and can't get them to take it.
What the actual Fuck do I do guys?

Not OP, but I don't have pictures of my mother, father, brother. I love them dearly. That's why I spend time with them as opposed to obsessing with my phone's camera.
It's fine to be a hobbyist photographer, but most people just take pictures without any thought. What's the point?

I live in a flat with a big courtyard under It, lot of space. Two years ago some cats started appearing around and my neighbour started taking them in his house, that internally has another courtyard. So last year some guys started killing cats (even the most lovable ones and little puppies) and It goes on by now. We are going to put on some cameras to stop this thing.

If modern day mammals were transported to the Triassic period how well would they fair? Would they all get eaten by dinos or would many of them be able to compete or even outcompete them?
78 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>2335034
Dinos would lose their habitats to deforestation then start trying to scavenge food around suburbs before getting shot
>>
>>2335034
it depends the Triassic was a long ass time, the entire Cenozoic era is only around 10 million years longer then the Triassic as it is defined today
>>
>>2335034
They'd certainly out compete whatever proto-mammals were running around and destroy the mammalian timeline.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I'm scared and you have helped me before.
My almost 2 years old dwarf hamster, named Papi, has acted a bit strange the last couple of days.
He is a bit drowsy and don't really react to me.
Makes sounds and just sits down and does the thing in the video.
He eats his food and drinks water.
He has moments when he acts normal.

Thank you!
Also read somewhere you can use thyme tea or something like that, do you know anything about that?
>>
Change his litter/bedding to newspaper or cloth for a few days. Certain wood shavings give off a lot of dust that causes respitory issues.

Also try putting a humidifer in your room, or putting the cage inthe bathroom with you while you shower so he can get a bit of steam to help his lungs out a bit. Make sure his cage has good airflow going on as well, and check what foods are safe for himto eat-he could be having some kind of allergic reaction.

Start googling his symptoms.
