Thoughts on protecting half the land and water on earth for purely nature without human interference?
I think it's a brilliant idea
We need giant nature reserves across various continents so humans don't destroy all the ecosystems and biodiverstiy
>>2351026
that will never ever happen
>>2351028
Why?
It wouldn't be that hard
We just need to tell illegal foresters, mining corporations, and trawl fishers to fuck off
Governments have a lot of power, they could easily crack down on these corporations who are destroying the biodiversity and ecosystems of this planet
It would be pretty great, but I don't know how the necessary human population control could be implemented in a "fair", non eugenicsy manner.
>>2351033
A lot of illegal foresters/poachers/ect are impoverished and do it to support themselves/their families. I know there are some programs to train and hire such people as park rangers to protect the local environment, but I don't know about the viability of doing that on a larger scale.
It's almost here!

/herp/ reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures
>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount
/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic
>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal
>Jump Start (formerly Hydrofarm) thermostat is a good basic and inexpensive thermostat for regulating ceramic heat emitters and under tank heaters (Amazon sells it)
>if you want something more advanced for temperature control, look at Herpstat products
I wish the care for these guys was easier. I live in very dry climate and it would be very difficult to get their humidity and airflow correct here.
Can we have a NOPE thread? Post what makes you feel NOPE.

You die and get reincarnated as an animal, but you get to choose which animal. Which animal do you choose?
One rule: you have to live in the wild and can't be domesticated.
African Bush Elephant
No predators and hopefully I won't get shot.

Human
I've always wondered what life in Detroid was like
I'll be a bee. I'll live a short, simple, hard-working, and honest life and then hopefully be reincarnated as a human again.
Found this wild turtle in my backyard. Will it make a good pet?
Turtles are considered pure in heart and peaceful, so it's death is considered vile and if it occurs under the roof of house, it's a bad sign.
How can I transport it safely throughout large distance in train?
>>2353839
Who says turtles are considered pure in heart?
>>2353839
>Will it make a good pet?
No, not unless you have a pond on your property. It is likely illegal to keep wild caught turtles as pets where you live and very young turtles can often die from inexperienced care.
If you want a pet turtle look into mud and musk turtles. They stay small, but also keep in mind turtles can live into their 50s or much longer.

I don't really like dogs or dog people, so that triggers me. Would've been better if the cunt got kicked in the guts and passed out instead.

It's not a great situation for anyone, but the kangaroo was legit headlocking the dog so not a lot of options. Also the kangaroo seemed more shocked than hurt, everything ended decently.

>5 year old kitteh seems to be scratching himself a lot, better go to the vet to make sure everything's okay
>vet examines him
>wait, he's yellowish all over
>didn't realize any of this because pretty badly colorblind
>have some tests done
>week later learn he has highly aggressive lymphoma
>massive tumors on his spleen, intestines, liver and his lymph nodes are fucked
>fucking devastated
>nurse and vet advise me to give him corticosteroids to make him feel more or less normal until it's time to call it a day
So what signs am I supposed to look for when it's time? The last thing I want is to live without my best friend but at the same time I don't want him to suffer. I tried asking the vets but they were vague as fuck and it's my first cat so I can't rely on experience. For example for the last week he's been not pooping for days on end and letting it all loose all over the floor in one go so I'm guessing his intestine tumor is getting bad, but the rest of the time he seems more or less fine. Would that count as severe enough to do it?
I don't know what to do.
pls help me
I'm sorry this is happening op.
Watch for changes in his behavior. You will know when he's really in pain.
Make sure you give him some good last days op, he looks like a great pet.
>>2353445
Okay, that sounds very reasonable, thanks.
>Make sure you give him some good last days op, he looks like a great pet.
I'm doing my best. Feeding him his favorite cheapass junk kibble and the occasional tuna since his long term health is not really an issue anymore, cuddling him to the point where he almost gets irritated and all that.
I just wish I could spend more time with him instead of being at work.
Sorry man, sucks to go through this.
When my cat had cancer she hung on for a good while, but when her time came her condition deteriorated rapidly. From what I understand this is typical- though ultimately it's your call if you think they're suffering too much as it is.
Sounds like you're giving the cat lots of love and attention, though. Sometimes that's all you can really do.
Could someone please help me identify this mushroom?
Aminita muscaria
Eat it to obtain its knowledge.

Have you tried before?
I'd like to give my cat a fighting chance in the outdoors when she grows up. I found LARP battle armor but it's super expensive and a Dune reference, which I've never read. I need a way to make her claws longer, at least. A gauntlet or something. I'm not a /an/ local, just a passerby.
How about you keep your cat inside if you don't want it to get hurt by a stray?
I usually tell outdoor catfags to fuck off but I'll let this one pass. OP you can't make your cats claws bigger but you can get some bladed armor which is the furthest you'll get to arming your cat but that's it. I wouldn't bother getting a helmet or gauntlets since they'll come off pretty easy.
>>2353280
>outdoor catfags
It's the most common way in smalltowns in Germany. There's not a lot of danger except for the car that occasionally kills one.
The concept of a self-contained ecosystem/terrarium is one I've always found fascinating. The furthest I've ever seen the concept taken though is a closed plant terrarium (which is just plants, and isn't that fun), or a "natural" aquarium, where a liberal planting of aquatic plants means filtration and feeding don't have to be done as much as possible, but that's not entirely self-contained.
Have there been any attempts to introduce animals (things like worms and such) and try to create a contained ecosystem with things more complex than plants? Any reading or such on the subject?

he made a glass box with algae ad brine shrimp in it and sealed it off. its been self sustained for a while now and the shrimp i think are mating.
You can't really make a closed ecosystem in the strictest sense of the world. Even a bottle garden is still semi-closed. The big problem with self contained and aquariums is DO. Without any system in place to oxygenate the water it'll become anoxic in a gradient toward the bottom of the tank and this compromises the viability of higher life. Neither plants nor algae will help against this.
The closest you can get is creating an algae farm and seeding it with zooplankton and gastropods. You can do this with an algal culture, or you can go to a pond in your local area that you know has been subject to algal blooms in the summer and scoop a bit of sediment + water into a jar. This is the same process for creating a winogradsky column but without any additives like sulfur or calcium. Depending on how much organic matter you take with your sediment sample, you can cultivate a rich community of cyano + algae in some months. This can then be seeded with zooplankton from your local aquarium store or (my favored solution) taking some water from a local lake.
Sealing it off completely is a bad idea. You want gas exchange, or bad things can happen in the long term like your vessel exploding. Algae produce a LOT of excess oxygen that quickly floats to the surface.

What you're looking for OP is called a "Vivarium"
Which is a terrarium with animals in it.
At a minimum they normally have plants, a decomposer like springtails, and something like dart frogs.
They aren't entirely self-contained though. You'll always need to keep adding water and additional food for the animals.
