Hello my stinky /an/ friends
I was thinking of getting a bird friend (a cockatiel) to keep me company as I'm very often alone and I've heard they are very friendly and social
I am just a bit worried that taking care of one might be too hard for a beginner, money is not too much of a problem for me but I'm afraid I might fuck up some little details
Should I go for it? Are cockatiels good boys? They look so cute, they make me want to cry
A friend of mine is getting a cockatiel too and she wants to hook me up with one but I'm unsure if I should accept! They are hand raised, they look healthy and they would arrive in may, so i still have time to think about it
Pic is what theyll grow up to look like I love birds

Are there any weird things i need to know before thinking of getting one that not many people talk about? Because stuff like giving them cuttlefish bones and making them balance on tennis balls is weird and I didnt know these things
>>
Cockatiels are some of the easiest companion birds to care for in my experience. They're not prone to being neurotic like some of their bigger cousins are so they're much more forgiving than something like a cockatoo or conure. They are definitely very friendly and social if they're hand-raised. If you have the space, resources, and time for one, I'd say go for it. They're top-tier pet birds in my opinion.

One downside I'd have to say about having a cockatiel though is the dust feathers they produce. Even having one cockatiel can produce enough dust feathers for it to be a bit noticeable. Having an air filter is a good idea but make sure it's birdsafe. The other downside is that the males can be noisy.

Male cockatiels can be weird and like feet. There are more than a few YouTube videos of them singing to feet.

All birds produce feather dust, including and especially chickens. Sweep your floors and use a medical mask if you're obsessive.

I'll start
>got a Siamese fighting fish when I was around 10
>had it for a grand total of 3 days before it leapt out of its tank in the night and died
>imagine my surprise when the next morning the fishtank is empty
>imagine my confusion when I find a dried out purple lump under my desk
>imagine my horror when I put 2 and 2 together
>tfw my stupid fish would rather kill itself than be my pet
Fuck you faggot fish. Moving on...

>be 13
>parents buy me an ant farm (the kind where you have to make it yourself by pouring plaster into a mold)
>go out into the garden to find some ants, hit the jackpot when I discover a black ant nest with not just adults, but also larvae and pupae
>FUCKING SWEET
>I get to observe the life cycle of the next generation before my eyes, how sick is that?
>dump the ants into their new home and look after them for the next several months
>feed them a diet of bread, fruit, insects, sometimes pieces of chicken, keep the nest cool in summer by squeezing a pipette of water directly onto the plaster
>I forgot to mention this is Australia, in the summer, in temperatures of over 40 Celsius
>desperately try to keep my insect friends alive, move them into a cooler part of the house and give them food with high water content like grapes and shit
>air conditioner was broken too, whole family had to sleep in the kitchen at night next to a fan because it was so fucking hot
>ants started dying from the heat one by one before eventually there were none left (by this point the babies had pupated and became adults, and of course they died too)
Those poor ants

My dad found out that some sick fuck is experimenting on one of our cats. While my dad was petting him he noticed that there is a shaved section of fur and small cut with medical adhesive or something. The fucker also cut a chunk of his ear and castrated him too. We are going to file a police report soon but why the fuck would someone do this?

>>2356543
Hard to say but i think the police is a bad idea. Get an electric razor and some pruning shears. Do unto others, op
>>
>>2356543
Sounds weird as fuck, maybe someone mistook him for a stray and took him to a vet to get him castrated? Anyway, take him to a vet as well, let them look into what was done to him, see if maybe someone recognizes him.
>>
>>2356552
Everything matches with this, when strays get spayed/nutered the vet will often clip a small portion of the ear.

believe it or not there are actually millions of spiders flying high above you in the jetstreams right now

Can someone help me figure out the dominant breed of these two dogs?

They are both rescues, and what the paperwork says doesn't appear to go with how they look.

What's your opinion?

To clarify, the Vet who the place I rescued the dogs from uses says the white on is a Golden retriever mix, and the brown on is Lab mix. I asked my own vet about the brown one, and she believes he is lab/akita mix with dominate lab features and personality traits.

So every morning I leave the trimmings and bones on a plate in my backyard so the neighborhood cats come and eat. Most are hardened street cats but one in particular is a bit young and I would like to take him in. He looks like pic related and is very skittish, I've made eye contact with him but I cant beckon him closer.

I'm a dog person so I really don't know what to do, but I'd like to rehabilitate this cat. Any tips?

>>
Taking care of this cat will be a massive undertaking and it probably will be very skittish and potentially aggressive after rehab.

Leave out your traditional scraps, but have a can of tuna ready. Try to bait him in that
>>
>>2356156
Be slow, use treats, but most importantly look into cat body language. You don't want to stare at the cat and make him feel threatened. He will probably need vat care which may cost a bit.

Hi there, my (old) female rat suddenly had a pretty red eye a while back, but it didn't seem to bother her so nothing was really done about it. It's been almost a year now, and she has cancer (tumours under the arm) and her eye developed cysts/absess's. We treated her with eye drops, and when it popped, we treated it with hydrogen peroxide and polysporin, but the cream makes her want to clean, which then she scratches and makes it worse. After the first one popped it left behind some gunk that won't come out, and now after trying different things it looks infected and bad. Any suggestions? (I do not have access to a vet. Please don't lecture on that -- she is already old enough to be dead and I'm not taking her to a vet. But i will buy any medication needed.).

>>
Just get her euthanized or do it yourself. She's suffering at this point and no medication is going to help. If there was a medication that would help then you'd need a vet to prescribe it anyway and I don't suggest doing it yourself through a farm supply.
HP probably makes it all the more painful to her. It damages and irritates tissue. Cleaning it with saline would be better.
>>
I honestly don't think she's suffering. It does not seem to bother her, she eats a ton still, loves treats, runs around and plays. I would think she was suffering if she slept all the time, didn't eat a lot, or acted off at all (trouble breathing, biting or anything like that), but she's the love bug she's always been. Just with a gross face. :/
>>
>>2355761
By your description it doesn't sound like she's suffering. But with an infection you need to get her on antibiotics and/or open up the infection and irrigate it with distilled or pure water in a irrigation syringe. Clean out all that nasty material. If her immune system isn't compromised (tumors?) she should heal up in no time.

Hydrogen peroxide, I haven't used that since the early 80's when a biochemist friend gave me an educated talk about it. It's vastly overrated with limited effectiveness. That bubbling action isn't a sign that it's working, but visual evidence that the chemical breakdown -oxidation- of H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) occurs rapidly and doing practically nothing beneficial. It's also probably irritating your cutie there. I'd never use it. Google it and you'll see why you'd never want that stuff around.

Other than that I don't have any other ideas. I'm just drawing on experience & education with backcountry/wilderness first aid. I hope she gets better, seems like a tough girl.

Which animal do you think is the absolute worst? (by animal i mean anything that is alive and isn't a human or plant)

my choice is mosquitoes, their only purpose is to be food for other animals while they suck your blood and transmit diseases.

>blaming the mosquito for carrying disease by complete accident, not hating the disease instead

By that logic, you are also the worst for being able to catch the diseases mosquitos can transmit. Imagine always having to worry about killing your host when you otherwise would be entirely harmless.
