I have a pair of American Kestrels nesting on my property. Two years ago I had a nesting pair in the same location, and they had three or four babies. When it was time for them to leave the nest they couldn't fly and spent time on ground level. But there are stray cats in the area, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, eagles, etc and some of the babies were killed. I had people come out to take the remaining baby and they raised it in captivity until it could be released.

I'd want to have this year's batch of babies survive. I can't surround the nest in a tall fence, since the babies can't do a VTOL like a harrier. I could build a platform under the nest, but they would probably fall off of that also. Is there a way to ensure that their babies survive on their own, or would I have to call the Audubon society before they attempt to leave the nest?

Also, could I do something to provide for the nesting Kestrels? Like leave meat out for them?

You want them to survive? Take them in, feed them minced food. Capture mother so when you release babies she is still attached and can teach them how to hunt.

Otherwise just stomp on them and get their tiny lives over with, life is nothing but pain.
>>
>>2358534
You could take the birds in after they fall out of the nest, and then call the society. It won't kill them to be in your care for a few hours or a day. The society or some other wildlife rehab is probably the best chance they have.

Baby birds usually aren't all that great at flying right after they leave the nest. It takes a few weeks for their feathers and muscles to develop enough to move around well. That's a big reason why small birds have so many babies--they know some will likely get eaten during that time period. It's tough, but that's life.

If the chicks were completely flightless last year then something must have spooked them out of the nest too early.

If you absolutely have to do something for these birds because of autism/OCD/whatever, then do this:

Kestrels like nesting in holes in trees, so I'm assuming that's where your nest is. If you know where the nest is, wait for the chicks to hatch and then put a platform under the hole. Doing it before then could cause the parents to abandon the nest. Once the chicks hatch they'll be to invested in it to leave. You can't do it too late after they hatch either, otherwise it will just be a repeat of last year's forced-fledging.

My Canary has gained excessive weight in less than a week. He always seems to be scared , he won't sing and it's becoming difficult for him to fly.
I'm only feeding him eggs, apples, lettuce, and seeds.
Is this normal?

How accurate is this list? My cat is a domestic shorthair, and the vet recommended hills science diet. I found out they have poor ingredients, so I'm on the lookout for better food. What do you feed your cats?

I'm looking for food that supports quality of life rather than just survival.

Hmmm, part of their judgement about non-options apparently is based on the menu-foods melamine scandal. That was indeed awful, but I'm not sure if all distributors that actually had that as a supplier allowed the product out and actually poisoned animals.

I'm curious about how valid their "meat product" disqualification is.
>>
>>2358386

What has he recommended science diet for? A basic maintenance food, or for a specific disease process?

I live in California and have a Costco membership so I usually just buy a 25lbs bag of cat food there. Kirkland/Costco produces pretty good quality cat food and it's affordable since you're buying in bulk

I used to feed my cat MeowMix before this until I looked into why she was shedding so much.

Turns out it was because I was a retard and fed her the nutritional equivalent of McDonald's twice a day for a year

How do I stop my kitties from hunting mice and birds?

MFW they bring in badly injured mice who are shaking from the shock and don't even run away when I pick them up to put them back outside.

>>
>>2357952
It's not bait.

Today it happened for the second time that they brought in a mouse that was injured and shaking but not dead yet. Otherwise there has been countless times they brought in mice to play with it and they squeak in fear and agony which is painful as fuck to listen to and stresses me out like hell.

I would really like to stop this. I keep telling myself it's not TOO painful for the mice bad because they're short-lived creatures and accustomed to danger but to some degree I know I'm just fooling myself. They have a CNS too and feel fear and pain.

We don't have too much space in the house. Keeping them indoors would probably bore them a lot...

Homosassa Springs in Florida is a natural spring and is a popular spot for manatees. They also have a small zoo, an underwater observatory, and a boat ride taking you from the main parking lot to the entrance.

Wow, My sister-in-law works there. Really cool park from what I've seen, although I've only been there once though.

tl;dr Living with mother and she owns 3 Norwich Terriers. The buggers play for keeps where they've dug up rabbit nests and killed a raccoon.

I'm a cat person, and my mother knows that but at the same time I'm not going to get a cat knowing it's a death sentence to be around those dogs. But they do leave animals larger than them alone.

Would a Maine Coon be a good cat to get in this situation because of how large they can grow?

Hey /an/, my aunt & uncle found this guy in their backyard a few days ago and decided to keep him. They got him a cage and some food and just went out of town so I'm in charge of him for the next week or so.
Could somebody identify the type of parrot(?) this is? We live in Southern Arizona although I'm fairly certain this isn't a native bird, lol.

I've read up a bit on care for them, from what I can tell the diet is leafy greens and fruit plus nuts, seeds, pasta and some other misc stuff. Is that good? Theyve been feeding him from some bag of parrot treats that's like dried fruit and nuts, and I've been giving him some romaine lettuce, strawberries, grapes, popcorn, cashews, and veggie straws.

sorry for sideways pic

I let him out in my room to let him stretch out and explore a little and he flew around frantically and eventually landed on my motherboard box and took a bite out of it lmfao, then my dumbfuck little brother scared him with a laser and he panicked and flew onto my back. I coaxed him onto the floor with food (because I was honestly terrified with him climbing all over me) and then set his cage down next to him and he hopped right back in, thank god

There's a tuxedo sitting in my lawn under a bench. I think she has an eye infection, too. It's raining, so how can I get her to come in so I can help her out with her eye and get her dry? I've been feeding her and her family since I moved into this house, which was last year.

Feeding stray cats is illegal in many jurisfictions, and can conttibute to the spread of disease and predation of native species. Priority should be placed on the adoptable stray animals (which are mostly dogs), and the humane destruction of the rest

I just checked, and it's not illegal where I live.

Just because something remains legal under the law, doesn't mean its the right thing to do, it could just mean they haven't gotten around to outlawing it yet.

I remember watching one about a giant cockroach versus a red rump tarantula. It's was hilarious how they tried to hype up the roach, talking about it's "viscious, deadly barbed legs" and armor for 10 minutes and then it immediately got eaten by the tarantula. Also, scorpions are apparently OP as shit.
