Where I live, in the Washington DC area, some cicadas have mysteriously emerged early (No broods were set to come out this year). I see their holes in the ground. I've seen their moltings on trees, but I haven't seen any of the bugs themselves.
I fucking love cicadas. I love how they look like horrific hellspawn yet are totally harmless. I want to find just one so I can play with it and let it crawl around on my shirt. Any tips on hunting them?
>>2386505
They are pretty fun. And dumb as fuck. Seriously, even as far as bugs go, they are super stupid. They will just lazily fly right into your face like a drooling idiot.
I've seen a couple here in the Bethesda area actually. Honestly they have zero survival skills beyond their brood cycle and mass reproduction so it's just a matter of time that you see one. They will not try to hide or run or fly away. They'll just sit there.
It may be slightly better to try to see them in the morning, but it's pretty hard to say since it's just a really weird small outbreak. It'll be funny if it's a harbinger of a full on mass brood.
Report it to these guys.

Cicadas are annual where I live, so not having them would be weird to me.
I also live near DC (frederick area) and I havent seen shit.
Why are bats the only mammal to have evolved flight?
>>2385416
It seems like there's a shit load of different bat species all over the world. What if more than one mammal species evolved into bats and we just call the bats now?

what kind of kot is this

there are alot of mammals that glide, if that debunks anything

Where abouts are you from and pick around?
And just curious, is there a way to grow mushrooms like an everyday plant?
>>2377416
I live in Oregon, and I pick all over the place. I do less foraging and a lot more growing.
Yes, growing them like an everyday plant is what I do. They are obviously not plants, and the whole "plant a seed and water it" concept doesn't carry over in the slightest. Want details?

Is there a simple way to renew a block of lion's mane grown indoors? Like providing the mycelium more food/space?
Or does it just stop colonizing after fruiting and you have to re-inoculate something new every few months?
Ok guys, I just got a new puppy and he's adorable
One big problem: after we'd already signed the paperwork, my wife learned that she'll have to start working much longer at her job. This means the little guy (pic related) is going to be alone for a whopping 11 hours a day
My wife's mom will come over to see him sometimes, but not every day
My question is, what can I do to help the poor little guy survive alone for so long each day? Also is there any way to stop him from whine-howling?
>>2387280
For a puppy, especially such a little guy, I'd look into a dog walking service to come at least once a day, preferably more if it's seriously 11 hours on the regular. There's no way he would be able to hold it that long, much less do it without making noise.
>>2387287
He has a little spot in his crate where he can go to the bathroom. So far he's 2 for 3 in using it properly
If I use a dog walking service for the days when my mother in law can't come, is once a day for 30 mins enough?
And can he be expected to get comfortable enough with being alone to not need a pet sitter at all? We devote almost all of our weekend time to him
>>2387293
8 hours is really the max a dog should ever be left alone, and that is with extensive physical and mental exercise every day. If it's over 8 hours you should have one 30 min visit, and, over 12 hours, two 30 min visits.
One thing you two might be able to do is stagger your schedules, so there is overlap time and the start and end of day where one of you is home while the other works. Not ideal, but might save you the cost of a walker.

I know it isn't the animal's fault, but you're retarded if you think it don't think it purposefully went after that child. you could see it calculating that.

how many of you are actually going to school for a degree in biology or a related field?
Im going for a degree in an american university for wildlife biology.
I have a BS in Animal Science w/ a minor in Biology.
Most just end up as teachers. are there really even any other job positions?
>>2388979
Most I have been looking at (as far as animal science goes) require a bit of experience, which leads me to was to return for an MS.

Why are deer so underrated when it comes to cuteness?
>>2387607
Because when they unexpectedly come flying through your windshield at 55m.p.h, the last thing you'll be concerned with is if it's cute or not.

What's the best prevention for dogs these days? One dog already has Lyme despite having had been on Frontline. Does normal bug repellent work for me? Since I don't want them on me either. Is there a human medicine I can swallow that keeps these fucks off me too?
>>2386249
I use a tiny bit of cedar oil on their collars or bandanas. I mean 1-2 drops in 500ml of water, soak the collar. It can irritate their skin otherwise. Always check the dogs after a walk thoroughly.
For people, I really like the Off Deep Woods, it helps a lot. Soak your socks, and shoes with it. Always wear a hat as they often fall from the trees.

>What's the best prevention for dogs these days? One dog already has Lyme despite having had been on Frontline.
We use 'sentinel spectrum' and 'nexguard'. I think they both overlap for tick killing.
>Does normal bug repellent work for me? Since I don't want them on me either.
Yes bug repellent works on you. There's DEET, picaridin(sp?) and lemon eucalyptus. Most people may tell you to use DEET. There's also permethrin type sprays which you spray on your clothes.
>Is there a human medicine I can swallow that keeps these fucks off me too?
Not that I know of. Someone might tell you to chew garlic or something.
>>2386255
Thanks, I'll give that a shot. One dog is black and the other is all fluff so it's hard to see if anything is crawling on them. I brush the fluff but there's so much of it I can miss something.
>>2386259
I'll look into those. Last year there was a thread like this and some people were swearing by some other meds for dogs but I can't remember the name, sadly.
Also does anyone know if I dog can 're-get' Lyme? Or a new tick with Lyme, would it further the disease?
Two of our dogs had it, one recently died due to a bad heart. For their Lyme they do/did get checkups and two vets told us that their 'levels' were very low and did not require any medicine or treatment since it wasn't affecting them. Can't say I understand Lyme very much aside from a childhood friend with tubes in his arms due to it and a very skinny white german Shepherd.
Should my current Lyme dog be getting some sort of medicine to prevent it from getting worse? Seems like a really shitty disease and I'd like to prevent what I can.
Hi I'm a 3-4 week old Diva Girl, would you please give me a cool name that fits me right?
