Grew up with family owning dogs my whole life which were basically just kept on the property and in the house amongst the family as a security measure when my Dad was a policeman so they never underwent any more training than toileting, sit and recall.

When I was financially stable enough to get a dog I took it to obedience classes and did the whole bag of treats puppy school thing. The dog was basically an addict fixiated on food and not me as a handler, recall was abysmal as he was only after food and not working with me becuase of our bond.

Been treat free for about 8 months and the training has been so much easier and I feel like we are on the same page now.

That's pretty specific. And at that age, looks grim. Not much to do other than ask your vet or tube feed her meat slushies and hope she doesn't throw them up.

My cat had diabetes for about 7 years. Lantus the whole time. He was almost 20 lbs at first diagnosis so the goal was to reduce weight, and only gain some back near the end of his life when he was having kidney problems. Forgot the weight he finally ended up at, around 7 lbs I think.

She actually eats really well. We are still trying out different insulin doses to see which one works best.

Keep your ears open in case your cat comes wandering back. Rattle a wet food can with a spoon, shake a bag of treats if your guy hasn't lost its hearing yet. Stuff like that but stay close to home and be aware.

My elderly inside-only cat (I think she was 15 at the time) mistakenly got locked out of the house and was missing for about 24 hours. We looked in every little nook and cranny we could get to within about a half mile radius of our house and found nothing, went door to door with flyers, called the local vet and animal shelters, and implored neighbors to take a look in their yard and call us if they found her. On the deck, we laid a box with her favorite toys and blankets in it and even partially opened a can of wet food, leaving our back door open for her to come in, as she had left. We found her that night, laying in our hallway as if nothing had happened.

Most escaped cats don't get too far from home. They're scared and prefer to hide. Given that our cat left and returned at night, I'd guess they probably prefer to leave their shelters at night, as well, thinking it to be safer.

Are you able to put in enough time with each animal? Do the dogs get walks, additional exercise as needed, and mental stimulation? do you play with the cats? would you have enough time to train a new puppy?
Is your property big enough for everyone?
Can you afford an extra set of vet bills, more food, and other crap?
