ok /adv/ I'm having trouble here just getting a simple job. problem is that it's my first and I've never had a paid job before. I've done volunteer work in the past but I haven't received any responses after applying to several places. what am I doing wrong? I think my resume is fine personally. should I walk into a store and ask rather than online?

Do you follow up on your applications? Also where do you live? If it's somewhere where it's summer, all summer jobs will have filled up by now.

no, what's a good amount of time between submitting it and calling them? what do I say? I can work longer than summer anyway

A few things from someone who has been down your road:
1. Did you list your volunteer work on your resume? If you have no work history, do that, and make sure you have an excuse (real or not) to make your lack of work history sound enriching (even just lie and say you were self employed)
2. Avoid retail unless there's literally no other options near you, and even then only if you have some kind of time requirement that forces you to have off certain days, like going to college etc. You cannot make a career out of retail unless you have a very specific mindset. It's fine if you just need to pile up some money, but it IS a dead end for 99% of people in it, and it can completely fuck your life up. The lack of upward mobility, the soul-sucking nature of dealing with the general public, the fake veneer on everything, weird hours making it difficult to have a social life or form the habits that make for a successful life, it takes a special kind of person to succeed in that environment. You can be stuck in this retail whirlpool of being too drained to get out of retail, and if you're looking for benefit or full time, it's really difficult to get positions because of ACA. Not to get political, but when you force retailers to provide insurance for their full-time employees, they do whatever they can to avoid hiring full-time employees. So unless you have an anime protagonist level of willpower or you want to be in your late 20's and forced to work multiple retail jobs at once to scrape past the legal poverty line, I would definitely not recommend retail. Work road construction, or in an office somewhere, or work in a factory/warehouse.
Best of luck OP, check monster in your area for some jobs that are entry level but not retail.

Yes it's retail - Go into the store just as they open. Ask for the manager and sell yourself.
Here's my advice.
1. Ask for the manager for whatever store or restaurant you're trying to get a job from. They won't Bullshit you with "ya gotta fill in the application online." and will have no problem in telling you if they are looking for help. Basic employees don't want to associate with you so they'll just tell you the barebones in applying for a job.
2. Lie about work history. Seriously, it's helped me with every part time job I got in the past. If you can find a relative who can vouch for you that you work for them in labor work, you'll practically get most jobs in minimum wage. At least two references. No more or less.
3. If you manage to get a interview, tell them you don't do any drugs or alcohol.
You answered your own questions. Only applying online and not following up will fuck you up.
