19 years old not going to school and dont have a job. Thinking of joining the military. Specifically the navy, or airforce I would only join the army or marines if a war was happening. I've already done a ton of research on it, looking at each specific job in the navy and airforce. Anyone have any advice?
Navy here. Do you really want to spend months out at sea in blazing hot Persian gulf? Don't be one of those people who join and then say they don't want to go on a ship. If you are gonna choose a job, choose one that will allow you to bring something into the civy world. Something like HM (Corpsman) is good.
Most importantly you want to get the best ASVAB score you can, so you have more chances of them working with you to get the job you want. However they will do everything in their power to entice you to go nuke. DO NOT. They pay isn't worth it. Unless you have a indomitable spirit and can stand being absolutely miserable for years and years.
I was a QM in the Navy, absolutely loved it but if I could do it over again I'd join the coast guard instead. Their mission is much more focused on actually helping Americans and they get a much broader base of training. A navy sailor will learn absolutely everything there is to know about one gear in a machine, while a CG sailor wont know as much about that gear but will know how the machine works, if that makes sense.

Oh and seconding this advice not to go nuke, they'll promise you all sorts of shit just say no. Other jobs to avoid are BM ab and AO, they're real scut work. Don't go in to be a seal either.

Yes like I've said I've researched it a lot, I definitely would not do nuke. And I actually want to be on a ship.

Oh I should have added that the job i'm thinking about in the navy is Gunners Mate. What do you guys think of that?

Don't expect to ever actually shoot anything.

Tell me about the nuke. What is miserable about it? What is the daily work like, as unbiased as possible please. I am interested in the pay.

As a gunners mate? They shoot and man the 50 cal's do they not? That's what I've heard.

I'm not in the navy but I've heard that its super stressful and some people even commit suicide because of it.
