I'm looking to get a tattoo similar in design to this one on my upper arm, albeit without the star. How long do you estimate it would take a tattoo artist to do this?
You need to research studios in your area and then drop them an email with that picture and ask for a rough idea of how much it will cost, if they are offering a flat price or a breakdown of rates per hour, per half and full day etc if not.
Don't shop for tattoos based on price alone. Find the best artist for the style you want to get done you can realistically afford. You are basically commissioning art and while the tattoo needs to be done well, your perception of the skill and professionalism of the individual who tattoos you will massively influence how happy you are with the outcome. You do not want shitty tattoos because someone was $20 cheaper or because you didn't like the fact that one guy was like "oh we charge by the half day rather than tattoo, idk half a day? Maybe a little longer? and another was like "$120 per half day, but call it $80 for the tat dude even if it takes longer" then he throws it on you in 20 minutes.

Tattoos are degenerate, don't get one.

You speak the truth, and I'm taking all the points you mentioned into consideration. As this would be my first and likely only tattoo, I just wanted to get as much information as possible before sending out queries.
by the way OP this style is called "American traditional" so if you can find an artist who is strong in that style, that'd be good

That's pretty useful to know, thanks anon.
