Work is like this double edged thing because it gives you an eternal foe within which to place all the reasons why you aren't something, while also providing a great deal of satisfaction by forcing you to socialise, deal with stressful situations and come up with solutions and fulfil aims and objectives. So on one hand you hate it because it is clearly evil and holding you back, but on the other it provides nearly all those feel good brain chemicals you crave.

If you never start to live above this idea of work being an eternal foe then retirement will be really stressful because suddenly you've got to accept and accommodate the reality that you were always making a choice to engage with work, and potentially when given complete freedom you struggle to fill your time and find meaning and purpose. This is especially difficult if you've shown and reinforced a strong work ethic in a drive to retire young.

If your retired life doesn't contain the same social aspects and challenging objectives then it will not satisfy as much as work does. The trick is to have these things independently of work, but this is very difficult when 99% of people your age have not retired and are still in this make believe battle with the eternal foe starved for time and unable to relate to those no longer engaged in the struggle.

Like I completely love my job and work at least 10 hours a day. When I'm not at work I'm bored waiting to get back to work and generally if I've got a couple of days off if I've nothing significant to do I just take sedatives to pass the time.

Alternatives to working could be volunteering somewhere you care about, learning a cool skill, going into a monastery or to a guru for a few months.
