I work at a retail store and make $9/hour. My boss asked me to go to the airport in town for a training and asked me if I was interested. My normal commute to work is 2 miles and less than 10 minutes but this is 28 miles and takes 45 minutes to get there. I'll only be there for four hours as well. So after taxes, I'm only getting really around $30 for that shift. My car gets 15mpg - is it reasonable and within legal right for me to ask for compensation for the extended use of gas and time for the work related training? He had to send someone in the store and no one else wanted it.
You should ask. If he doesn't help, then decline, unless this puts you in some sort of danger of losing your job or getting some sort of write up. Any chance you can take an uber or try to find a ride with a friend or family member?

Dude it would be an expensive uber. Again, I can go but I'll end up using 4 gallons of gas @ 2.65/gallon and spending an hour and a half commuting compared to 15-20 minutes. So really I'm earning less than $15 for that day.
Am I within legal right or entitled to compensation? My state is Florida

Go and read your contract

If your wallet can't take it then decline. Google Florida labor laws and compensation.

We aren't your boss, we don't have the answer. Go ask your boss.

Eh just do,it and keep applying for better jobs.
I once worked 2 months as an unpaid intern for a summer to get the manager to write me an awesome job reference, it helped land me some mid level jobs making about 50k. Focus on building skills and networking a bit, get some letter of recommendation together and do what you've got to do to get 5 or 6 people willing to say your the greatest worker ever. You're going to get screwed over a lot in low positions, don't let it get to you, focus on fund people to help you.

Will it result in a promotion and raise in pay? Then it is a good investment that wikll quickly pay for itself.
If not, you can reasonably ask for travel money.

Just politely tell him that you'd like to go but unless you get compensated as described you cannot afford it
