Hi /adv/, looking for some help with university.
Current finishing up second year, however not sure if I want to continue to top up.
Pros of top up:
-get a bachelors degree instead if a foundation (better degree)
-Possibility if developing skills for my future job/career and going in a more specialised role
-more work towards an online portfolio for work (plan on going freelance rather than company based)
-Chance of finding work 6 months after finishing course
-course is pretty interesting/somewhat enjoyable
-I enjoy working one to one with people

Cons:
-dislike members of the current group, some have shown to be bossy/up themselves a lot although considered them as good friends
-Because of point above, dislike group work and am spoken over when I try and get ideas across, no one seems to care
-Tutor doesn't really put a lot of effort into helping out, maybe backseats at times
-Course has mostly been a tester course, many problems to do with equipment and programs
-being chucked into the deep end with little to no help, most advice I've been given is "use references" (Art course doing digital art)
-Im going to be around £22k in debt. Currently £15kish in debt.

Not sure exactly what I want to do at this time, however I have the end of the month to decide. What do you guys think?

What does this mean? Are you trying to decide whether or not to finish your degree?
>>

I'd have finished my course at the end of this year with a base degree. The course I currently do lasts for 2 years and you end up with a foundation degree. My top up year is just an extra year of the same course, but ends up with a better degree at the end of it.

Basically, I don't know whether or not I want a better degree for the course I'm doing.

You haven't told us what course you're doing. But if it's going to mean you get a better degree at the end of it, why not?

it's a Game and Animation production course, but I'm focusing more on the 2D side of things, such as concept art, illustration etc.etc.

I'd love to have the better degree, but I just don't feel like the next year will be good due to it being a tester year.

Can you go back to finish it up, or is it a situation where you can either stop now and take the lesser degree, or finish up and take the better one.

>Game and Animation production course
Honestly though, given how niche this is and how few jobs there are in the industry, I'd say you're wasting your time having got this far to begin with.

See now this is where I don't know how K want to go with this.
I know for a fact that I don't want to work in a company and prefer going freelance, but that has its ups and downs.
The better degree could be useful as a "Look I have this so consider me" thing, but it's also a portfolio that helps me out more too.
I'm currently working on a commission right now and am enjoying it a lot more than the group work I'm doing with other classmates.
I could consider taking a year off, focusing on my freelance and keeping my part time job for extra cash, but then I'd have to check if it's cool for me to join the third year of I want to.

I don't see any downsides then. Your degree isn't very marketable as it is, you might as well do what you can to get a good job using it. You can decide whether you want to freelance and work up your portfolio even more or if you want to work for a company afterwards
>>
>>18060045
True. I want to try and get my portfolio as best as I can before I start my third year, but I guess both would be great rather than just having one or the other at this moment of time.
Will fill the form out for next year. Thanks anon

No problem. You didn't ask for advice on this, but I'd also suggest trying to get along with your fellow students more. Employers often ask about working in a team and things like handling conflict, so the better and more harmonious you can be during group work, the more easily you'll be able to answer these questions.

Any advice is helpful for me. I do get along with everyone as friends, but it all seems to change so suddenly when it comes to group work. Like I said before, some change in weird ways.
I know companies and teamwork there are strict to get the work done, but it feels like a dictatorship in my class
