It's hard to pinpoint the issue without details. These people aren't completely missing the point, but the way they're saying it is borderline retarded.

What they should be saying is that you need to value yourself enough to go for people of "higher quality", i.e. those with more integrity and wealth of character. Be charismatic. Know your strengths and don't sweat your weaknesses so much.

If you tend to pick people who you seem need to be "saved" or "improved" and feel like you are the person to help them do that, knock it the fuck off. Additionally, have enough common sense to know when someone is bad for you. Don't just pick people because they accept you.
