Just got through this book and at one point he says his alternative career choice would've been programming Video Games, but it just wasn't important enough.

How do you decide which direction to go in - the comfy career that has no overall impact or the stressful one that will possibly change humanity?

the one you enjoy the most.

i enjoy the stress.

When in doubt, its best to ask yourself which of the missed options would you regret more in 5-10 years.

Musk is a businessman and performer. Take advice from a real scientist. At the end of the day a job is a job.

Programming video games in the industry isn't exactly comfy with those crazy deadlines.

Also: your wrong.
It makes an impact.
Just imagine you see kids smiling, being happy, making good memories through their childhood, because of the games you helped develop?
How doesn't that have an impact on humanity?
Happy children will become happy adults and they'll have good careers, which will help everyone involved and you helped achieve that.

It's like saying toy designers are worthless. Man I loved my toys. I still do. And I'm grateful to the people who designed them.

It's all a matter of perspective.

There is nothing comfy about game developing, it's just less ambitious. It still takes silly amount of your time and is pretty stressful.

Whatever I enjoy most, which is a lot less about stressful or not, because any non minimum wage job is stressful, it's all about the fun ... and constant challenges can be stressful AND fun.

Alternatively you could look into something that fits best to how you want to live your life, being an artist is suboptimal if you plan to drive a new sportscar every day for example.

A toilet cleaner has an impact too but it's hardly on the same level as the guy who came up with a self cleaning toilet. Simplistic entertainment like vidya and toys have a pretty low impact beyond entertaining kids for couple hours. Nothing wrong with that of course, if everyone would attempt to impact the world, we'd be fucked.
