How do you choose a therapist/psychiatrist? Like you can use

If you're a guy get a guy. A young attractive lady is the wrong choice. They're not allowed to do anything romantic and sexual tension can ruin the therapeutic alliance. As for therapist/psychiatrist/psychologist/counselor
Psychologists will employ a number of techniques to improve your mental well being if that's what you're looking for, but they can't prescribe meds.
Psychiatrists can prescribe meds but they won't engage in any therapy or discussion beyond "are the meds working?" "can you complete this measure to see if they're working?"
and a counselor is less useful than either but almost always cheaper. They'll talk to you about your problems but it's more about acceptance than change.

Things to remember:
Be Honest
Meds are a bandied not a permanent solution
Counseling and therapy alone can be a great boon but some conditions NEED meds, especially if they have symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, or suicidal thoughts.

Thanks. Yeah I don't think medicine will help much in the long-term. Sounds like I need to try a psychologist, I hope my insurance can pay for most of it.

I've been to several, and in my experience you just can't really know if you'll mesh with them before dishing out for 2-3 sessions.

If after 3 meetings you've never walked out of the office with a modest feeling of hope for the future, go find another one.

It depends on you. I personally have an easier time opening up to women than men, but that's always been the case for me. Think though, is there anything you think you wouldn't feel comfortable admitting if you're worried about an attractive young lady judging you for it?
