Give it time. You're probably in shock and when you least expect it or maybe when small things begin to pile up or when another big thing sets you off you may get a sudden rush of feelings. Just know that this is normal and be paitent with yourself. Talk to someone about it if you find it really concerning.

I think part of it may be that I had a realisation about a year ago that he was 10 or 11 (not sure since we got him from a rescue centre) and dogs his size don't live much longer than that. So I had accepted what was going to happen.

You are coping with it by repressing your emotions because of how dangerous they'd be to your survival. It's evolutionary; in a week or so you will experience sadness to the fullest. Not because someone told you to.

i usually watch a sad movie, relax... then the sadness rollercoaster hits

i do that when one of my patient dies, helps getting the feels when you can have thme instead of a mental breakdown at work when you can't

My grandmother died a few years ago and I didn't. It's normal if things come as a shock I think.
