Hi /adv/,
My wife and I disagree on how much we should spend on Xmas gifts for the family. Our combined income varies, but is generally between $55k and $60k/year. We have 1 child, we have no debt and can pay off all our bills, but haven't put much of anything away in our savings for a couple of years now. We live modestly but we're quite comfortable.
She takes care of all the Xmas shopping (she likes it & I don't), which suits us fine except that I'm the one who manages our finances, and I was shocked to see that she had spent almost $800 on gifts for both her & my families. We spoke about it and she says that she thinks it's a totally reasonable amount to spend on our families. Is that an unreasonable amount? Thoughts?

I don't think it's unreasonable, but I really think that next year you two will have the conversation of how much to spend on Xmas.

O for sure. I brought it up already but after the fact is def not the right time, and it was not a productive conversation. We'll talk next November.

Holy shit, dude.
A rational conversation on 4chan.
Happy New Year!

>Happy New Year!
And to you!
It depends on how many people you bought gifts for, but really in my opinion it's Christmas so go wild. Especially if you're buying gifts for kids, it means a lot more to them. I suppose you could talk about it next year, but if you can afford it, which it sounds like you can then don't make a fuss over it.
I spent $717 on gifts this year for 7 people... and then I spent $645 on my present to myself.
$800 seems about right for everyone.
I buy for 10 people and generally spend $500-$600 total. But if I had kids it'd probably be an extra $200 per kid. The holiday is really about them anyway.
