Okay, coming from someone who has studied and lived in Japan, I will tell you what not to get:

So, my recommendation? Get a bonsai tree. Look up the different kinds, and then decide.

Okay, having looked at the picture, and it looking like a mix between a bonsai and sakura, I would say get a manekineko (cat with its arm up), a good luck racoon with large testicles, an obon (Japanese lantern), a giant salamander, or an Omamori (Japanese talisman with the prayer usually written on the front of its bag). Oh, or maybe a koi fish.

Yeah! Actually when I went in I had no idea I was going to get a full sleeve done, but he got to work and that's what ended up happening. I've found that it's best to give the artists as much creative freedom as possible, if you want their better work. And if nothing else seems to work there in okay with leaving it as negative space lol. It's really pretty and I can't wait until the rest is done and it's all colored in.

That's true, but you give them that freedom on the sketches. The fact you've already gotten it done means you've already restricted everything that could be put there and how it could be put there. If you knew what was going to go there beforehand the artist would be able to more appropriately style the tattoo around it.
