In all honesty I have multiple dating site accounts, I have a POF, OkCupid and Tinder.
I understand where you are coming from though OP, wasn't trying to poke fun, just relaying my experience.
All 3 accounts I've basically given up on however I do reply to certain ladies to see if they actually try to keep a conversation going. If they do, then I might attempt a date after about a week.
However, with craigslist I've only ever gotten bot responses, "escorts", or whores that a dumb as hell.

Lately I've actually been working on self confidence. If I see a cashier that I find very attractive some where, I try to find something to compliment them on that doesn't seem too pervy, eyes, hair, perfume smell, etc. Basically short and sweet to see their reaction and to help me boost my confidence at complimenting in public. Later on once I feel confident about it I plan on seeing if I can get a number to get to know them better after complimenting them.
