In a way you've answered your own question. When you're with people you know well, you're not self-conscious and can relax, but with others you're too aware of whether you're impressing them and thus get all stiff and artificial.

One solution - be with others in situations where you will be distracted from your self-consciousness. If you're all watching a game, or working hard at some activity (work or sport), you're too focussed on what you're doing to worry about how you look, and will be natural and therefore at ease.
