It's a stupid question but kind of logical if you think about it, it's a simple ice breaker, one of the first things a person notices about you.

They probably just want to start a conversation anon, I know the question itself kind of contradicts that but people usually don't think that far.

they're just trying to be friendly and get you to open up a bit more

I'm a pretty quiet guy as well, I don't have many (any?) friends so I'm pretty awkward in social scenarios that sometimes crop up at work but I do open up a lot more one on one. It's something I've really got to work on.
