I'm thinking of taking 3 months off work next year to travel to the USA to find a job there (I'm from the UK).
Has anyone does something similar before? I'm sure I can convince some employer to employ me but I'm not sure how hard it is to get a work visa after that.

The absolute first thing any employer will ask for is your Social Security number (equivalent of the British NI number) and you won't be able to get one. Try a fake one and alarm bells will ring on every federal computer.
You MIGHT find someone promising to pay you in cash for some low-level menial work, like loading trucks or washing dishes. But he is likely to not pay you when the job is done, and you can't really complain, can you?
If Trump gets in, things will only get tighter.

I want to get an H1B visa not work illegally. I'm an experienced professional.
You want to find a job in America with a non-immigrant visa? Do you plan to continue living in the UK, but working in America?

I want to move to America if I can find a job better than mine now. I'm living in another country right now but my passport is British.

You have to find an employer that would hire you and sponsor you. And then you can apply if you have a bachelor's degree or masters and the degree major must be related to the job you are applying for.
You need to talk to a USA immigration professional, and you're not likely to find one hanging out here on 4chan.
I work in law, but not in immigration. I can hook you up with an online consultant if you tell me how to send you an email.
