I'm 22 and I've been trying to grow a beard for the past 3 weeks but being young it's pretty patchy. Not sure if I should shave because when I do I look way younger and uglier

just trim it to one length over and over again, it will grow out, when your beard gets full, trim less and less but keep the form and you're good to go, it just takes a lot of time.
