Hey /adv/, I'm a NEET who actually looked at themselves and decided to turn their life around. I've been applying to retail places left and right, but nobody's calling me back with a job offer. I applied to fast food too and the same shit happened.
So I was reading online and a tip that people shared was that you should call the place you applied to after a few days and bullshit that you're checking if they got your application so that the hiring manager knows who you are and looks at your application specifically.
So what do you do if the place you applied to has an e-mail system where you get an e-mail saying "This e-mail is proof of your application being received"? How are you supposed to stand out? I'm already using a modified version of a resume template I got from one of those men's fashion websites, so I think my resume looks interesting enough.

Go there personally.

This. Once the hiring manager has seen your face, you're 80% of the way there.

You need to call the place a few days after. That's how I got my job. It's easy and shows initiative. Going in person is also very bold and can work well.

You get 2 calls for every 40 job you apply to...
Also calling is okay, make sure they don't mention "Please do not call."
