On related note: I don't even know what tone I should use. Nagging doesn't work, obviously. Setting example just makes him compare himself to others. Saying positive stuff neither makes things worse, not better.

Well, you can't force him to have ambitions for his life. Did he lose his job and just fall apart or something? Can his parents do anything or are they too retarded to do anything useful?

If he's not even considering his options, then he's probably not worth the effort. Whether you want to keep him as a lover is your prerogative, but don't wait around for him to turn into a good partner you could build a life with.
