I think I'm starting to hate my best friend. We've been friends since junior high, and honestly I don't know how I would have made it through life without him. It's been around 6 years, and little things about his personality and the way he speaks are starting to annoy me.

Firstly, I feel like he's too opinionated about things, and he speaks like he's above most people. He watches a lot of videos on YouTube about atheism and politics and shit like that, and they've begun to influence him a little too much.
He's also very passionate about being knowledgeable about stuff like video games and movies, comic books etc. I normally wouldn't have any issue at all with this, except now I try to avoid mentioning those things - I don't want to stir up his inner "I'm right you're wrong" shithead persona.

These aren't necessarily flaws with his character, but they are traits that seem to clash with my personality. I tend to be more relaxed with my interests and views. I don't pretend like I know more than other people, even if it's about a subject that I'm passionate about.

We still have a good time and luckily have nearly identical senses of humor, but everything else is starting to come apart. Is this normal? Should I try talking to him about this? I don't want him to just change they way he behaves, but at the same time, he's starting to drive me nuts.

Everyone starts growing apart in some ways over time. All that matters is that you still get along; if you care enough a few things here and there aren't going to make a real difference.

Look at all this word porn textbook advice. I'm lovin it!

People change. If you hate the person he became, tell him about it. He can either try to please you not being obnoxious around you, or you can both break up.
What's the problem here? You feel like you invested time and the return you got isn't the one you wanted? Bad luck.

I mean it is /adv/. Might as well use it like it was meant to be used.

Talk to him about this. Part of a lifelong relationship is being able to support each other unconditionally as well as being open about any issues you may have. If he's too much of a shithead to realize that he is becoming something undesirable, then so be it. Whatever happens, will happen. You learn to let go. He may grow out of it and apologize for it one day but that becomes less likely the older you get.

tl;dr: It's a bridge that needs to be crossed but don't keep your friend from crossing it either by burning it down.

Maybe he tried to become what you wanted him to be, and when he became it you didn't like the end result. Maybe you should have changed. Maybe he tried to communicate that, but you wouldn't listen.

Tbh senpai, that's a huge problem with college age people these days. They're overwhelmed by the amount of information they absorb, without even realizing it. Suddenly they hear voices telling them how smart and right they are, and it swells the ego. It's bad for all parties involved, and some people are never able to reign it in.

I'm an atheist who became totally enthralled with the YouTube atheist community when I was 19 and starting college. It's almost indescribable how amazing it felt to finally hear other people espouse the very ideas I would struggle to even articulate. Intoxicating and invigorating; it all made me want to just rip into people and tear down their ideas just like my favorite philosophers and atheists.

For me, it took seriously offending a dear friend who was a born-again christian, to make me realize that I was hurting other people for no good reason. I was obnoxious, arrogant, self-centered, and overall just a shitty person because I looked down on everyone around me. I never would've realized it if I had stayed with the hugbox that I found within the YouTube atheist community.

I'm all for having reasoned debate and deep conversations about many different topics, but jumping down someone's throat the instant they say something you disagree with is not productive. Not every atheist can behave like Richard Dawkins.

These people are conceited and arrogant. I'm agnostic. But having guys that are unemployed, or who haven't worked for ages tell me how marxist ideals are the way forward and capitalism is for idiots, as well as all christians are idiots is annoying. Honestly, athiests annoy me more than christians. I don't give a fuck about anybodys beliefs so long as they don't try shove them down my throat. But athiests seem to think they are intelligent for coming to their conclusion and seem to enjoy mocking people with christian beliefs. Don't even get me started on unemployed/average paid employees talking about marxist ideals.

The best thing you can do is either cut these people out, or learn to ignore their behaviour. You know they are fuckwits, conceited/arrogant. It's one of their bad points. If it gets too much, either shut them up through a debate or cut them out.

My roommate has never worked a day in his life and tries to tell me how capitalism is evil and the rich elites are oppressing us.

I can never talk about my political ideologies because I know he will get absolutely mad if I tell him my point of view.
