I grew up in the Deep South and I always hold the door open for whoever is behind me, be it male, female, old, young, etc. It is just how I was taught.

Where I live it's just kind of expected that you hold the door open for the person behind you. I've had girls hold doors open for me, I don't even think anything of it when it happens.
