What is your pre-med major?
Isn't med school very expensive in the states?

They give you all the loans you need. And ways to pay it back free if you work a few years in "medically underserved communities".

Are these shitholes full of potheads?

They must be "medical underserved" for a reason though.
Too many poor people? Too remote? Too gheto?

Yeah, all of the above; no doctors want to live there.
>>
>>16544669
Huh, that is what I am thinking. Why else will the US government let you pay it back for free if you work in these regions?
Would you recommend OP to work in these gheto regions to get away with student debt though?

I'm in hs. Ive finished my associates and im finishing up my bachelors now. associates is in physics and my bachelors will be in chem

If he can stomach living in a rural area. It's not so bad if you can handle living in very small towns and lack of services. You make a killing as a family practitioner in the middle of nowhere
>>
>>16545398
This.

But you need a medical facility that will offer you the access the equipment and services you need.
>>
>>16545398
How smallm
>>
>>16545398
Does working in those areas mean that I cant get a job if i don't specialise in something other than pediatrics
>>
>>16544195
OP if you're still in high school the only advice I have for you is not to fuck up in college. So, so many students went basically ape shit their first and second years, realized how expensive it was, and dropped out.

Nothing's wrong with down time but for the most part, be smart, be mature, and get out ASAP, that's how you need to think in college. Don't even worry too much about high school besides getting good grades, which isn't really that tough.

medfag here, finished med school this summer and have been working in surgery for two months.

don't do it man. don't study medicine. you can do so much better, trust me. whatever you imagine it's like, it's really really not. do something else instead.
>>
>>16544195
If you want to be a fucking doctor then get the fuck out 4chan or else you'll kill somebody
>>
>>16546412
What's so bad about it?
>>
>>16546412
Also how was the mcat?
>>
>>16546480
>>16546477
For the MCAT part, I had to google that. I studied in Europe and we call it a "numerus clausus", I guess it's similar but i really have no idea.

what's bad about it... well I just did it for all the wrong reasons and expected something completely different, and pretty much all of my friends at uni had the same experience. it's hard. it's not fun. it takes your soul and it wrecks it and kills it, it kills relationships and friendships and just about everyone. it's not very rewarding, mostly it's just "oh god how much of a dumbass can you be" or "oh god gimme a break"

i love a lot of it and i hate myself a lot more than i ever have because of that. being a physician requires so much dedication, you have to give up on so much, and i honestly don't think it's really worth it. surgery is a bit better, because not too much gomers and shit. my goal is anaesthesia. chill out in the theatre, have a good life. or, well, as good as possible in a clinical field.
>>
>>16546497
Why did you decide to be a doctor?
>>
>>16546506
to help people, most of all. wrong because you only really help a fraction of them. you can't save everyone from everything, and at first it was hard to accept. it still is, sometimes, but mostly i just got a thick skin and have this "oh well fuck it" attitude and i don't like it

the ofc for the social status, a very wrong reason. i got bullied half my life. i thought if i became a doctor i would finally respect myself, and others would respect me, too. becoming something does not solve all problems, and unfortunately i found that this reason is quite a popular one amongst med students. i'll show them all. i'll show my dad. i'll be the greatest. everyone will love me. bullcrap.

i did it because of passion. i think that's not a good reason, but it's really the only thing that kept me going all those years of hard work and all the shit you get from superiors. i had so much interest for it, so much passion, and to have that destroyed again and again and to find the strength to pick it up and build it up again and again and again... i loved it and they made me hate it.

i didn't do it for money. not to make my parents proud, they would have loved me just as much if i had become a teacher instead. i wanted to prove myslef i could do it, and i did it and it didn't make me feel better or anything. i did a thing. good job, hundreds of people did it before me and thousands of people do more meaningful things every day. it's not worth it.

i also did it because i wanted to have a carreer since i never thought i'd actually end up with a nice guy, but hey, there i am, and i'll be forced to combine working and motherhood and everything and it's gonna be so unnecessarily hard.

As an amerifat medfag I mostly agree with this yuro doc's sentiment, but note that him being in surgery, probably gen surg, means that he hates his life more than the average doctor.

He is right though, medicine sucks and you shouldn't do it if you have another career you're interested in.

I can't help you that much since I'm from the UK and things are a bit different here, but here's my 2c.

Firstly, spend some extra time and ace the MCAT. It's worth studying autistically for a couple months and grabbing a score a hundred or two points above your peers. I know that my UKCAT score has a lot to do with my successful application.

Only do it if you're really passionate. Medicine is very all-encompassing, and you have to give up a lot for it as a career. You will lose friends, hobbies, and lots and lots of time. Your social life will really suffer. Make sure it's definitely what you want.

Thirdly, ignore the money. Money comes late in the game, and if you want a quick payout this is not a career for you, although it is doable if you completely sell out.

Don't do it for status or respect; anyone who only respects you for being a doctor won't respect you for too long anyway, and their respect is worth very little.

Many of your colleagues will be thick as mince, and those that aren't will probably be arrogant and overbearing. Medicine is very hierarchical, and this can be frustrating.

Lastly, if you're passionate, truly passionate, then it will be a decision you'll never regret, and nothing else will suffice.

Some key issues:
Debt incurred while training
Time to become an attending
Decision making dictated by reimbursement rates
Declining respect for doctors as a profession
Propensity for lawsuits, creating an atmosphere of "cover your own ass" medicine
Bad lifestyle, especially surgeons
Idiotic patients that cause you to burn out

One of the worst things is the paperwork. Way more time spent documenting in EMR than actually seeing patients. The emr is always shit too, even stuff like Epic which is supposed to be the bees knees

Just finished first year, what would you like to know specifically?

Do things like beta club, national honours society actually help?

Lengthy clinical experience, not some bullshit "I shadowed a guy for a week" or hospital volunteering

No

Another Britfag doc of ten years here (I'm 34). Simple advice. Become a fucking Dentist, or better yet, anything but a doc. Divorced, lost house and had two big mental breakdowns in 5 years. Do something better with your life.
