Different people need different types of help. Some suicidal people need love and support, others need therapy, it really depends on the mental health on the person in question. You can't generalize and say therapy is the end all answer to everything.

Unless you are suggesting that a guy killed himself solely on the fact that a friend of his gf's acquaintances suggested his gf was fat.

The function of a significant other is to bring happiness to the other person's life, if you have ever been truly in love, especially with it reciprocated (key part here), you would know that it's one of the best feelings in the world (blah blah chemicals in your brain). OP isn't delivering that.

Or his girl has other very serious problems which he can't help her deal with.

Therapy varies according to the patient's needs.
You can cope and come out ok with love and support, but you can't be sure you haven't repressed your trauma in a way that WILL bite your ass later. Get PROFESSIONAL help for serious shit. It's cheap and it saves lives.
