take an evening or two to learn the rules and terminology. use Reddit and Wikipedia, 4chan is shit for learning about anything.

then take a look at the standings and get an idea for which teams are typically good, which ones are causing an upset etc. that should give you enough to work with, add kind as you're honest with your friends that you're new to the sport. no one minds that, but being dishonest about your knowledge is easy to pick up on so don't bother.
