You have no idea what it's like in there. What it takes for him to earn respect, preserve respect, maintain his prison relationships, etc. Only he knows what he thinks he needs to do. I have something similar to what you describe;
Severe mood swings and paranoid delusions give me a fear of loosing control and taking an others life because i believe they are plotting or taking malicious actions against me.

The way i overcome it is seclude myself from a majority of society where possible, do autistic semi preset routines and only have a small core of people i trust who know about my condition and why i do what i do. It was difficult to adjust to but the benefits outweigh the costs (i get to have some quality of life and a moderate amount of peice of mind) needless to say the world always seem to want to encroach upon my hard won freedoms.

1.An hour's commute is fine. Hell, both my parents have one, and once I got a job so did I.

2.Practical experience is worth several times more to employers than academic achievements (just proving you could get them is probably enough).

3. You won't be dropped in the deep end and expected to know it all. You will be trained what to do and be able to ease into it. It's intimidating, but once you know what you're doing not all that hard.

I just keep a washcloth near my bed and use that, its not a big deal to wash regularly and I don't really care if it gets a bit rougher from being constantly washed.

If I was you I'd probably wait and see where it leads and not try to rush anything.
If you end up getting togther it's important to not worry about the end of the relationship, try to focus on the present part. If you break up there will always be negative feelings but depending on how it ends you could go back to being friends (in time).

Have you checked local newspapers, community center bulletin boards, or called any apartment buildings in your area for vacancies? Dear op.

Unless you have a strong job and decent income, you're not going to afford living solo. You'll be renting a room somewhere. Given that, here are some rules of thumb to go by

Same sex
No pets
No drugs
Always ask for references
Always scope the joint out an hour beforehand
Always scope the neighborhood beforehand
Don't rent with people who have small kids or kids in general
Don't rent with someone who is also renting for the first time
Don't rent from a social introvert.
Use craigslist sparingly.
Use apartment finder or roommate finder websites, but always crossreference .
Make sure you get put on the lease so you legally establish residency.
Be wary of short term sublets.
Pay your share of rent and bills using money orders made out to the utilities or rental agencies, never give the person cash.
