There's definitely a real connection between us and we've always looked out for each other, even when I treated her poorly, during and after the subsequent break up. I know she's fond of me but I figure she's in two minds about it.

As for your family, just write a simple note tell them it wasn't their fault, I wouldn't put your true reason for suicide in there. Just keep it short, simple, apologize, and remind them it had nothing to do with them, and they should continue on just fine. It's not a bad idea. If you get into a program with no formal CS experience, you'll probably have to take a few classes as deficiencies anyway. A community college would be a cheaper way of getting those classes finished and seeing if it's something you want to commit to.
