I've read only two or three smutfics which I liked.

One of which was Harry/Fleur, the other two were Harry/Pansy.

The Harry/Fleur one was very well written, started off in the 4th year during the Tri-Wizard. Voldemort's gone, completely removed from the story, but someone still put in Harry's name. The author's basically made Fleur have an interest in younger guys, even giving her a history of doing that with others before she met Harry. But she's also kind of a bitch, really likes being dominant and stuff like that.

What I enjoy best about this is that while Harry can be at times submissive, he isn't spineless, he isn't some kind of guy who just goes along with everything.

Sure, it's OOC, in a way, for both Harry and Fleur to act like that, but fuck it, the smut is good and the writing is decent if somewhat purple in prose at times.

The Pansy/Harry stuff started off adversarial, Pansy just basically cornering Harry and started doing things with him. Was kind of fun to read about, but the sequel was abandoned.

The exposition is annoying because the writer writes omniscient descriptions of scenes in conversational style; this would be more tolerable if the whole story was in first person POV, and at least barely tolerable if it was all in third person limited POV, but no, he just has to have his omniscient descriptions alongside his limited POV instead of writing the whole thing consistently. Even in first or limited third person POV, saying things like, "The Great Hall was, well, great," is retarded. Drop the well; there's no need for your verbal tics in fucking narration. Then reread your sentence, and if it sounds like a 3 year old wrote it, rewrite it.
Almost all the descriptions are unnecessarily flowery and comprised of a string of dependent clauses leeching the soul from the unlucky independent clause, when the whole thing could be simplified to one or two clauses each without sacrificing anything.

This fanfiction falls pretty heavily into the "I'm so smart look at me" trap. No, sorry, Harry doesn't work out general magical theory in his first hour of trying to cast spells. The author is also a fan of having the main character demonstrate they are smart by summarizing the remainder of the canon plot and pretending to have worked it out by being smart.
For example, Harry overhears Snape and Quirrell briefly mention trying to find a stone, and from that concludes that Quirrell is trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone. We go with it because we already know that's the canon plot, but in context it doesn't really make sense. Why does Harry assume that 'the stone' refers to the mythical artifact that's literally never mentioned before his brilliant deduction? Why does Harry link the phrase 'the stone' to an attempted robbery at Gringotts? Why does Harry assume Quirrell is responsible when there are dozens of named characters in the relevant chapter and hundred more randoms?

More problems with author not getting characters and thinking they do:
Dumbledore is really into the greater good. This is pretty clearly not Dumbledore just at all; Dumbledore was really into that until he had to fight gay wizard Hitler, and then he was willing to do things for the greater good, but he never felt very justified in doing so.
At one point Snape is rendered totally impotent by someone citing rules at him, instead of just not caring until they got Dumbledore to enforce the rules.
Dumbledore and others constantly calling Voldemort Tom. Yes, I know canon Dumbledore does this occasionally, but not even close to that frequently, and really just to be condescending.

Honestly, just don't read this. The main problem really just comes from the author thinking he's smarter than he actually is. Literally everything else linked in this thread is better than this, so go read those instead.

I don't read a lot of fanfics, so no real recommendations. Most of them are about on this level, and it gets really, really frustrating.

The thing about fanfic is that you kind of have to work within the confines or at the least the spirit of the original work, or alternatively make enough significant changes to create a new take on canon. Otherwise it's just poorly written OC cribbing the only good ideas from a better writer.

If you're just looking for more stories set in the same world, that's not really easy either. The world's got three main parts: lore, tone, characters. It's really hard to filter out your own ideas to keep all of those consistent with source material, especially the more you write. As much as I've just shit-talked this author, if I tried to rewrite his fic, I'm sure someone could criticize my interpretations of the characters for being inaccurate (although hopefully not nearly as much). The lore is a bit less black and white, since a lot of lore is never fully fleshed out in canon, so the important thing there is to make sure it's consistent with what's known in facts and theme. Tone is one of the hardest ones to get right - a lot of fanfics involve powering up the main character in some way, and if the canon villain is kept the same, it would remove dramatic tension - so the author has the villain clearly be more evil, and then the whole tone can go from being optimistic to grimdark in about ten seconds flat. Obviously tone can change over time in a series, as a lot of series naturally get darker over time, but doing it in fics doesn't work as well because there's rarely fics that are as long as the canon they're based on, so it feels rushed. Some authors try to get around this by contrasting their tone with the original, but that's not always done well.

TL;DR: fanfics by their nature are hard to do well, go read some OC.
