I post the first 2 so you guys can get caught up.

They had guns that were clearly captured from PMCs, mixed with civilian weapons and ancient military guns dredged up from god knew where. There was armor too, though it was all "dumb" armor, with the exception of his own suit. Which was lying on a table in front of the cage along with his rifle and sidearm, with the Captain standing next to it.

"Mr. Beardfurt!" The Captain called, waving them over. "You've been doing very well here. I'm surprised how quickly you've managed to adjust."

"Thank you sir. I've enjoyed it myself."

"I'm glad to hear that. Anyway, you're probably wondering why I brought you here. I've come to a decision; I don't think you're a threat to us. In fact, I think you'd make an excellent asset. I'm prepared to let you have your armor and weapons back, and Ketri here has convinced me to make you her co-driver when she goes on supply runs." The Captain explained, lighting a sajhat cigarillo.

Nate turned to Ketri, who was grinning from ear to ear. He couldn't help smiling too, then took the Captain's hand and shook it enthusiastically.

"Thank you SIR! I-i don't know what to say..."

Before, someone being this forward would have shocked Nate, but he had learned that this was just the way Sha'dee were. "Mr. Beardfurt, you're going to be her lookout and gunner. Your armor has better optics and data aggregation than any system we have. It's one of the reasons I'm trusting you with this. Now, both of you get moving. I want you suited up, packed up and ready to leave with the others in 3 hours."

Nate and Ketri both saluted, then began loading Nate's armor, weapons and magazines of 8mm railslugs for them into a cart as the Captain turned and left, exiting the room. Trundling the car back to Ketri's quarters, they layed the equipment out on the bed and started to strip down.

They arrived just in time, slipping into the hanger and making a beeline for Ketri's truck. He got into the passenger seat and copied her, locking the chair into place while Ketri pulled a set of AR goggles out of the dash and strapped them on. Nate didn't need goggles; he had retinal implants that performed the same task, he just needed to sync them with the truck's systems.

That's why I'm on the fence about it. Canonically the race that I'm calling Sha'dee for this fic aren't all that monogamous, since they're natural communists who share pretty much everything with their family/friend unit. But a lot of Human culture has rubbed off on them, and I'm not sure if I want to make this fic more cute, or more sexy.

The sun had been down for an hour or so, but the trucks plowed on like ships sailing through the ocean of sand. They had split into groups of three, two gun-armed trucks escorting each comns truck. Nate was seated in the turret of Ketri's vehicle, his helmet's optics scanning the horizon. The trip had been uneventful so far, they had had a bit of a scare when their comns truck detected a drone, but they had ducked into a canyon and powered up their active camouflage until it left. Her ability to mimic was uncanny, her powerful voicebox could produce almost any sound. Her music taste was interesting to say the least. Most songs these days were electronic, a genre that had been called EDM centuries ago, but now was just "music". Ketri didn't like it at all; she said it was too clean, too perfect. She preferred ancient Human music from before the rise of the Conglomerate, back when people still used physical instruments and unaltered voices. Particularly, the instrument she called a "guitar", and a genre known as "rock". It was a bizarre name for music, Nate thought, but he found he liked it. There was something about the aggressive, fast-paced sound and the fact that it was made by real Human hands on a real instrument that was fascinating. He could feel the emotion and passion in the notes as they coursed through his chest. The English the singers spoke was archaic and peppered with slang centuries out of date, but you didn't really need to understand it to get the message of the song.

"Alright, this is Red Rover 3, I say we pull over and dig in for the night. We're almost due for a satellite pass as well. Over." Ketri suggested, glancing at the timer that indicated the next time a Conglomerate satellite would be in position to detect them.

"Red Rover 2, roger that. Over."

"Red Rover 1, ditto, over."

"Alright boys, heading for those dunes at 18 degrees North. Over and out." Ketri hauled on the steering wheel, pulling the truck onto a new course as Nate clambered out of the turret and down into the cab, slamming the hatch behind him.

Okay, so I had this idea for a slow-burning xenofic earlier and I could use some help developing it.

So far all I've got is that the majority of the cast are xenos, wishing to start on some sort of adventure. As they're recruiting people, they end up catching the attention of a human. This guy is a considerable rarity where they are, imagine finding a samurai in Republic Rome, and you've got a pretty good idea of what it's like.

This guy is quiet, brusque, and a very long way from home. He decides to come with them.

Something I wanted to focus on is the whole "Human through alien eyes" trope, so we can see this guy from the other side of the mirror, as it were. Presumably there could be opportunities for smut, stress relief and all that, but I would like to make him seem pretty weird from their point of view.

The principle of convergent evolution would suggest that the bipedal form wouldn't be uncommon; we evolved it for a reason, so it's not unreasonable to expect a large number of intelligent, technology-using Ayys to fit this basic form. It's also useful in a narrative context.

One thing I did want was for the aliens to be as diverse as possible. That way I can have more fun figuring out how they can all share the same space.

Like, I was just considering some sort of giant insect (like a Vespid from 40k) but then I started wondering how it'd be able to survive outside of a high-oxygen environment.

Be an interesting idea if this guy has to wear a respirator most of the time, to filter out all the different atmospheres that his crewmates use.

Here is what I was able to scrape together for a sketch of Tash. I tried drawing more than just legs and hands, but it was so bad that I had to stop. Almost makes me wish I hadn't dropped those art classes in school for mechanical engineering. Just because you can draft, does not mean you can draw.

I've got ideas bouncing around for the next part of the Tash/John story, still need a name for that as well. Anyways, expect to read about the quirks of interspecies relationships, xenophobia, more consensual hand holding and adventure. That's convergent evolution for ya. And also why designing the homeworld is so important, it allows you to set up conditions which make diverging trait advantageous within that context.

Well, a purely aquatic creature probably won't, just because the environment is too constricting. Dolphins are about the upper limit.

Basically, it needs to be able to use tools and have the vocalization capability to develop advanced language. Telepathy is... scientifically sketchy to say the least, but it would theoretically allow for the same thing. Sapience isn't an evolutionary advantage that would be preserved if the species can't take advantage of it.

And of course, there's genetic engineering and uplift by more advanced spacefaring species.

Yeah, I would, but I'm worried I'll fuck it up beyond repair. Took me plenty of careful erasing to get the head where it is now.
