"Finished" Noxian Nights last night for the first time. I thought it was pretty fuckin good, how about you guys? It was pretty vanilla as far as fetishes go, which was nice. Started off a little slow because of how shitty you are at level 1 and seeing the same blowjob scene over and over, but I really liked it. I'm also a sucker for RPGs.

Had to scrap some things. I am starting to get less and less happy with RPG Maker due to its restrictions.
Luckily I am still pretty much at the start, so I am currently thinking about switching engines. Maybe Game Maker or Irrlicht.
I feared things like this might happen though, so I am not disheartened by it. It's also the reason why I don't talk much about it, so as to not raise hopes and then go through setbacks again and thus taking a while to release anything playable I am actually satisfied with.
I want to at least have all features and mechanics implemented, as well as something to play through before releasing something.

I am stubborn enough and have enough of an ego to see it through.
I'd like as much art (CGs, sprites, busts) as possible, at least in the long run.
My top priority is to finish the game though, everything else is second to that and I will adjust to make it happen if needed.
Once the story and features are complete, I can keep changing assets and adding more to get it closer and closer to what I eventually want it to be like, which might take a while.

I am not really planning on making it x hours long.
I approach this as an author, so it will be as long as I need to tell the story, but it won't get longer than what I feel still makes sense to add to the story.
There are some dreams to really get inspiration from P&P and make it feel open world in the long run (another reason to switch engines), but so far that is just an idea requiring probably tons and tons of work to implement. I don't want to make it too huge of a project and really focus on just finishing it first.

Impossible? I don't know.
Unnecessarily tedious? Plenty of things.
The problem with RPG Maker is the restriction on the number of maps, slots for variables, number of stats and the like.
Plus it's easier to use different formulas for different things if I make this from scratch.
But I never worked with the new MV, so since they don't hide any classes anymore some things might have gotten easier or even possible in the first place.
The thing is just that I don't need to put up with those restrictions and can make my own to fit my vision better. I also like procedural generation (which I would need for a big open world), and while I haven't looked into it, I am not even sure that's possible with RPG Maker.

Stats are fairly easily added to the vanilla scripts. It'll look like an inheritance clusterfuck at first, but you'll get there eventually.

As for the limits on the rest, I never really encountered them. You can assign stuff like arrays and dictionaries to a game variable btw. Only disadvantage here is that you can't call them without scripts.

I think that procedural generation is impossible without editing the core files. You MAY pull it off with a tedious amount of sprites bound to events, but that's an idiotic approach.

It'll all be just so much easier if I simply start from scratch.
And while I probably don't need to break the confines of RPG Maker for finishing the game, I want to plan long term and be able to expand the game the way I like later on.
I might never even go there, but having to start over and port everything to a new engine in order to expand it later on would definitely eliminate that possibility right from the start.
And being a programmer I just like my freedom, even if I don't need it.

Fair enough, I've been looking into an alternative myself. My biggest complaint are the editor-to-engine link: some stats and modifiers are taken from the "database", but the correct syntax is almost never documented + you can't really expand on these in a sensible way.

ILL, a japanese game maker built some impressive engine in RPG Maker. If you haven't, I recommend you to check "Dungeons and Prisoners". Its got procedural generated dungeons.

Personally, I'm not a fan because:
- It's less a game and more a simulation; you can play fairly optimally fairly easily and you never really have to make strategic decisions.
- It's incredibly fiddly. Not just the gameplay, but the interface.
- It's repetitive in terms of porn.
- The characters (the girls) have little to no personality and certainly no dialogue.
- Overall the writing is lacking to nonexistent.
- The art is mismatched.

Now a lot of these issues are inherent to the genre of game it's trying to be, so I don't mean to say that you shouldn't like it. But this is why I personally didn't.

After some testing gonna go with sprites for the Starfire game, main advantage is I can have 30+ characters animating on screen without slowdown while with 3d framerate loss sets in after the first few. Also lower filesizes and it's the look I was going for anyway so why not

don't expect too much from it, the porn isn't too different than normal. I just found the setup from a gameplay perspective a little better than it's peers. I'm not finished yet but it feels like there's just the one fort and there could possibly be several ways to solve the problem. I really feel like a rouge is a really good class to play for something like this because stealth and guile over overt combat works really well for these types of games. At least when the PC is a female, never seen this tact played with a male MC.

I am just a programmer, but it's not like I never worked on 3D models (or with 3D artists). I know how much time and skill it takes. It's roughly 24 hours of pure work to make something good and that's modelling only, not including the initial sketches and concept art.
I also know most games use DAZ or so nowadays (in this case Second Life), but I never got why DAZ even went for this bad realistic look. Why didn't they go with a cartoon-y look in the first place? Why does nobody else?

I'm mainly an artist, but I decided to learn Ren'py just to see what people would think of my game idea.

Thanks for the ideas, guys! Seems like some of these I've seen before, and pretty much only haven't considered gore, because I'm not sure I'm good enough at drawing all the squishy bits, but it all works. Shameful to say, but as an artist I'm at the point in my life where I'd draw the most bizzare, awful and crazy shit for anyone for 8 hours a day, every day of the week, if I'd get ~800$ a month from it. So I can kinda understand where they were going with this when they started, catering to get a nice start.

The shitty thing is that now that they're successful, they didn't add the animals again into the game, as an option, now that they don't really have to worry about cash and could give both sides what they want, or even mix it up that humans fucking with animals makes these furries in the game.
