Figures you didn't get it. Simon sez: Learn your basics or your animu will always show you don't know them.
>>
Maybe a bit unrelated but should you start with gesture before doing loomis figures?
>>
>>255177
I disagree with that. If I had drawn the second face here, I would have felt like I had missed the sketching of the face, because it doesn't match the expression.

Just the way that eyes, nose and mouth are aligned seem to oblige that the face be drawn along. Here, the chin would have to be under the mouth, so the left jaw sould be higher, the forehead more on the left, and the whole face more diagonal.

It's kinda hard to express. Just look at the face's elements without considering the face shape, and think about how it should be.

This.
In fact, it's staggering that the other guy didn't recognize such a commonly discussed subject.

It's a great idea to start out learning how to draw nature the way it is - it's arduous but it gives you good fundamentals.
But it's a completely different skill "on top of that" to interpret it stylistically - and of course that has got elements like creative decision making in terms of what techniques and reinvisioning you choose to employ in order to do so.

I also can't help but notice that he had to add a bunch of extra emphasis to make his argument sound convincing, even when taken out of context.

I feel like you niggaz are just butt hurt because people don't treat cartoons like art.

It takes talent and practice to draw, period. whether you are good or not, it really comes down to people's opinion. That being said, that whole "creative decision making" and "artistic taste" sounds like pretentious babble. Realism is hard and it has a lot to teach. Cartooning is simple and shallow. It's really nice and creative, but there's a reason there are a lot of different styles and techniques.

Now, if you guys are done playing pokey-poke, I would like to continue posting floppy tits.

>drawing animeme or cartoons shit like ponies and Autism Time before realism is like cutting your writing hand off
This.

My sister has been drawing her entire life, but mostly cartoons and things like that, while I never really drew much at all. A little over a year ago I decided to start practicing and jumped right into studying realism and the human body and I'm already a lot better than she is at drawing real life.

It's not that hard to go from realism to cartoons, but it's incredibly hard to go from cartoons to realism.

Now, I do have to say that I love cartoons, Jap cartoons included, and I do consider them art. The problem here is that people try to place cartooning above realism, like it's some next level shit. Several possibilities, in order of likelihood from greatest to least:

1. He's being an asshat intentionally because he sees low-hanging fruits to pick and doesn't care that they're cherries.

2. He genuinely thinks the strawmen he's posting are accurate to what Simon and much of /aco/ believe. If this is the case, then he's making an effort not to understand the point--which is essentially what happens to most stupid people when their opinions are challenged.

3. He's actually retarded.

/ic/ is a bunch of people who have been trying to get orange juice from an apple for way too many years to quit now.

Truth is, photoshop is not a painting software. Using SAI/CSP/Painter to draw and paint and PS for post-production would save hours of time. But they don't want to hear it.

Truth is, there is absolutely notthing wrong with using reference, specially if you make your own reference. Learning photography or sculpture will vastly improove your painting and zbrush is the holy grail of value+shape studies. Don't wanna hear it.

Truth is mastering anatomy won't make stylization easier any more than basic geometrical exercises. Stylization requires you learning design and visual communication, a mastery of anatomy is helpfull but unnescessary in today's world with millions of reference pictures at your grasp in less than a second. Don't wanna hear it.

And finally, stylization pays better than pedantic naturalism. Nobody cares how well you can render the creases of the left pinkie on a worm's eye view. Companies want you fast and creative, patrons want you affordable and unique. Nobody cares about your anatomy not being perfect and you're not getting paid more even if it was.

I just spent half an hour digging through my gifs, I guess I saved it somewhere else. It's a literal x-ray (well, MRI) of intercourse, from the side. I wanted to cover that this diagram causes a point of confusion, and it's in almost every x-ray drawing I see.
Ah, here, I found a more accurate diagram.

The uterus is not attached to the end of the vagina. It appears this way in this drawing because the cervix occludes the top of the vagina.

The uterus is actually mostly in front of the vagina, with the cervix being basically a part of the uterus stuck into the vagina from one side. No matter how long an insertion, unless the penis can bend at right angles (so I suppose tentacles still), it goes _past_ the cervix into the stretchy end of the vagina, called the fornix. It looks like a teeny little space in this image, but that's because like most anatomical diagrams, it's mostly based on a dissected cadaver, not medical imaging of someone during intercourse. When aroused that's the stretchiest part of the vagina and anything over five inches on the average woman (though it varies considerably from person to person) will be pushing into it.

After sex, the fornix kind of wraps up against the cervix, holding the semen there for the cervix to sort of slurp up.

So coming straight into the womb on the same level, biologically, as something non-flexible going all the way through from ass to mouth without killing the subject.

>>
>>268637
I believe that's basic shapesdrawing. Simplification, the stuff taught in Fun With a Pencil and a couple of life drawing books. There is a big difference.

Symbol drawing is taking preconceptions about what an item looks like to draw that item - all the time. Like the ugly way non-artists draw noses, eyes, or hair, is symbol drawing, because that symbol says 'eye' or 'nose' to them.

Basic shape is taking the simplified form to start with, and getting more detailed eventually. You never start out detailed, you get the big picture first, and chisel down. Artists are very much like sculptors in this way.

Just my view on it.

Not really.
Most pros use photoshop because it has been around for 25 years. That's longer than most of the people on 4chan today have been alive.

Photoshop has also had a shitload of bad rep from artists all it's life's long. The only reason it was never dropped or boycotted back when people had more bite was because it had the monopoly on photo editing and graphic creation. Nowadays with true competition a lot of people have migrated to Sketchbook Pro and Clip Studio Paint. It's not even getting plundered that much with Paint Tool Sai being the new easy download and crack thing and being a very powerful painting software on it's own.

Photoshop has never been good for drawing, and it never will, and 25 years later it still blends colors through a desaturation algorythm that makes shit look muddy. It's obvious Adobe wants to compete in brand name rather than quality and as soon as an app comes out with SAI's painting power and the very basic tool creation, value correction and filters of photoshop, Adobe will see an exodus in their bank accounts.

I've been a graphic designer and illustrator for 12 years and have personally "downgraded" to Photoshop Elements + Clip Studio Paint because that combo gives me a better drawing and painting suite plus all of PS CC's post-production potential, at less than a third of what I had to pay for a year of CC, and with much less impact on my computer's resources. Also less spyware and shit.

It's a portraiture manual. It teaches you the basic idealized proportions, how to measure, observation and many ways to graphically solve stuff like shadows, creases, imperfections, etc.

While I do understand that Realism and proportional humans is an impressive feat that is not meant to be discounted in any way, I think drawing simplified characters, stylized expressions and anatomy, and unrealistic proportions is still art. "Cute" and "sexy" are totally subjective. It's not something you can really turn in to a specific method like drawing correct perspective or anatomy. It's subjective, but the Venn diagram of all of humanity's collective opinions on it is going to be at least about 80% overlap in both cases.

i really don't feel like it because any advice will be to work on fundamentals and such. its all i've been told to do and i STILL don't understand at all how to do that.

sure, i can practice, but i just guess i don't get 3D space or anything like that.

I still would like to see it to be honest. I know the "just do the fundamentals" stuff all too well, so maybe I could help out if I could see where you are right now, if you aren't already better than me of course.

I don't know of any, but you could always look at a bunch of Disney model sheets and do some measurements. The size/shape of the individual facial features isn't as important as their relation to each other, so take note of where the mouth is placed in relation to the eyes, for example.

Do they want jobs on real cartoons? A lot of artists I see honestly just see it as a hobby/freelance anyway. Not everyone has ambitions like that.

Read "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" to get past symbol drawing and study the fuck out of anatomy. Get an anatomy book and look up shit as you draw next time. Also, learn how to draw realistically before you do anything with stylization.

this is EXACTLY what i figured anyone was going to say.

thanks.
>>
>>273919
I don't think you even need books at this point.
If you've really spent quite some time to get to this level you should seriously just scrap everything and start from scratch.
Who are your favorite artists?
Look at their pictures and understand what they did. Most artists explain their methods.
If the art that you like isn't too abstract you should even feel free to try to imitate it at first.
>>
>>273929
i've been at this off and on since 2011
technically since 2009
what i posted is pretty much the best i can do, any more time i try to spend on something is worthless because i don't know anymore on how to fix what is already broken from the start.

i have a lot of artists i like and tons of ref pics, i think i can SEE how they do what they do, but i can't draw it the same in practice.
>>
>>273929
what do you mean by not needing books, but starting over from scratch?
>>
>>273954
That you need to learn to see. You're not reproducing reality. In a way, you're not drawing, you're writting characters out of symbols.

Books will never do you any good until you get past this.

Most books /ic/ would recommend won't do you any good yet because of how little you are able to coordinate what you see with what you draw.
You could go for beginners art guides, but I have never read any of them, so I don't want to recommend anything.
>>273984
Yes.
The art you're doing shows a degree of stiffness and lack of understanding that is quite frankly baffling after that much time of practice.
This isn't necessarily your fault, though. It is my belief that everyone can learn to draw well if they want to.
There has to be some sort of basic misunderstanding that hinders you from progress.
Try connecting what you see to what you draw. You see things 3-dimensionally. Even flat cartoons have implied 3-dimensionality, but you are currently drawing in 2 dimensions.
A popular exercise is to simply draw a sphere with a singular light source.
Try to draw what you're seeing, not what you think a sphere might look like.
This might seem to be an extremely easy exercise, but I've seen beginner artists have struggles with just placing the shadow on the sphere.
That shows how important this exercise is. If you can't even understand a sphere, the easiest object there is, how will you ever understand the human body?
Draw spheres lit from different angles and review your work.

Thanks for correcting me, bro. You're a saint.
I went into detail and said that he doesn't work in 3-dimensionality and that he needs to learn to understand the things he sees in 3-d space to successfully replicate them in 2-d space.
You are an asshat.

Fuck off.
Everyone can draw.
>>
this is why i never bothered to post on /ic/, even in the beginner threads. i always felt like i was missing even the basics of basics.

i know shit is in 3D, i can draw a sphere, but its everything else like proportion and such that is a mystery. do you just keep drawing the human form until its "right"? that seems to be the case.

I think I fucked the eyelashes up on the right side.
And Im having a bit of trouble because of the pose and anatomy on her torso.
Also I shouldnt have attempted to ink it.
>>
>>274535
If you're going for a cartoony look It's not terrible. Just really stiff in a lot of places. It needs some reshaping around her breasts and her arms look completely different lengths.
>>
>>274535
Yes. It's very bad.
I don't like throwing around the term symbol drawing.
But this is symbol drawing if I ever saw it.
The entire face, the chain, the hair, the breasts, the beads, the loincloth veil thing, whatever it's called, they're all just shapes that you put on the paper. They're not actual objects to you when you draw them. Did you learn from Oliver, Age 24?
Listen to the advice we've been trying to give you.
>I think I fucked the eyelashes up on the right side.
No one could give less of a shit about that if your drawing looks like this, least of all should you.
>And Im having a bit of trouble because of the pose and anatomy on her torso.
Of course you have trouble. You have no idea what you're doing!
>Also I shouldnt have attempted to ink it.
Correct. Inking this was not only pointless, but counterproductive.

I'm sorry if I'm being an asshole, but if you want to not be shit go and draw a fucking sphere, not this.
>>
>>274563
I know Im pretty bad, kinda quit /ic/ on that. I dont have any talent for this.
The drawing spheres thing I tried didnt really feel it helped me.
What I have problems with is depth. For example facial features it never really works for me except when I get lucky.
Not much to do about it.
Also the chain was very much symbpl drawn Ill confess to that.
Also care to post merc.wip?

How the fuck do I fix the chest it got flat because I based her body on a square and a circle, I initially had a circle as her chest but it didnt work so well. If I try again Im going to remove the square I tried applying.

>How the fuck do I fix the chest it got flat because I based her body on a square and a circle, I initially had a circle as her chest but it didnt work so well. If I try again Im going to remove the square I tried applying.
you need to see the form of the breast. How it would fall, how her bra would hold it up, where her nipples would reasonably be. What I usually do is start the drawing with the chest just being flat (by that I mean not having breasts. The chest should still have a convex angle to it) Once I have her pose and chest position set I then just think about how her breasts would behave, factoring in gravity, weight, and any objects that would be interacting with them. It sounds complex but it's honestly a lot easier than you think once you understand form.
since you seem to be going for a cartoony look I'd say in addition to studying actual weight and breast placement, also look at what kind of style you're trying to emulate and how those breasts tend to be drawn.

Same goes for everything else in this. Reminder, using references is not cheating (unless you're straight up just copying them I guess.)
>>
>>274637

merc.wip is something you'd have seen a good part of if youd had browsed /ic/ alot. Ill get to drawing a sphere.

>What I have problems with is depth. For example facial features it never really works for me except when I get lucky.

Box your heads and use midlines to figure out the placement of the features. This is covered in a lot of tutorials, even some of the ones in this thread. You should read the notes instead of just look at the pictures.

Before you even worry about stuff like style or anatomy or all the talk about symbol drawing, learn how to process what you see as real objects in your head. Simplifying things into boxes is going to be easiest on your brain. If you can't even do that, then practice drawing boxes.

Do you see that none of these look like 3-dimensional objects?
Despite trying to geometrically find the shadows they don't fit to your objects in a single case.
It isn't even important that you produce a geometrically perfect shadow, even if you had succeeded in that. What's important is that you understand the form. You clearly got this assignment before and didn't learn much from it, either because you didn't get the right feedback or you didn't listen.
None of your spheres look like spheres, because once again you just replicate something you've seen without understanding it.
That stupid plane through the sphere construction makes no sense, because that would only work if you have parallel light, like that from the sun, but even if you have that kind of light it's pointless to construct the shadow. You're trying to draw cartoons, not be an architect.
This has less problems than some of the things I've seen in art school, but it also seems like you have more trouble getting rid of your problems, so I'm gonna redirect you to a youtube video that contains the secret method to git gud.
You might not like to hear this, but it appears that if you want to be good you will have to follow the instructions detailed in this video more closely than other people.

>>274909

Eh I dont post if Im afraid of getting critcism.
>You clearly got this assignment before and didn't learn much from it, either because you didn't get the right feedback or you didn't listen.

Ive kinda only read it on the internet and never gotten feedback on it. Ive tried going to drawing courses but most of it was usually draw this oranges. But never anything on for example symbol drawing which I have kinda been struggling with like forever. Started trying after I noted how I could only draw characters from a perfect front view otherwise it would fuck up totally.
As I said Im terrible. Im one of those guys where his friends thinks he is dank at drawing but as soon as anyone looks at his shit they cringe.
>>
>>274928
Alright, then. That's good.
Just do what the video says and do the sphere exercise untilyou get it right. By that I don't mean use geometry to project objects onto planes, that's not what this is about. You won't learn anything from that. Instead, take a sphere, shine light on it and draw what you see.
If what you drew doesn't look like what you saw, do it over. repeat that until you understand the object. To avoid your problems with symbol drawing try to draw different objects that are simple at different lighting angles as well.
(Good items are fruit, balls of yarn or golfballs, everything that is simple and roughly spherical, but has enough texture and structure to teach you more about shadow and light)
Draw, look at it, if it sucks, draw again.
>>
>>274978

So this exercise works by building a kind of intuition about how the object works with light for example a circle and how shadows interact?
And getting over symbol drawing by forcing me to draw from real stuff?

>>

Nigga, none of this makes any sense.
I'll give you an advice I found out helps people like you a lot.
You see, your problem is that you're not paying attention to how shit looks, you're paying attention to how you think it looks. You're ignoring your subject and laying down a stereotypical icon of what you imagine the subject looks like instead of what it actually looks line.

Well, I want you to print a bunch of relatively simple shit like fancy letters, geometrical shapes, cartoons and shit. Simple lineart stuff, notthing with volume since you're still not ready for that.
Then I want you to pick a couple sheets of tracing paper and a cheap ballpoint and trace the fuck out of what you printed.

You may be thinking "but nigga, that shit's wrong, tacing is evil and I'm better than that", and I'm gonna say "fuck yo shit man, trace that shit". I wouldn't even be surprised if you actually failed at outright tracing the first time. Maybe even a couple times, but eventually you'll learn to actually shut your fucking brain out and draw what's real and not what you imagine is real.

This happens a lot with kids that have speech impediments or are introspective to a fault. You ever talked to someone who seemed incapable of listening to what you were saying? Like they're hearing but they sure as fuck aren't paying any attention or actually know what you're saying but don't seem to understand it? Well turns out they don't do that only with their ears, they do that shit with their eyes too and you may be one of them.

Trace that shit nigga. Then do what >>274909

...Your saying Im as bad or even worse than the average grade schooler?
>>
>>276300
Let's put it this way: You're seeing life through a filter.
Your brain puts up too much immaginary interference that doesn't let you see reality.

Trace that shit. That'll teach your immagination to stop interfering with your actual vision.
