As to whether or not you should make a mod for WT or make a new game depends entirely on what you want to make.

If you just want to learn renpy then I'd suggest making a new game from scratch that does a few basic things and using the online documentation for renpy. WT is ok to learn from but if you follow it too closely you'll pick up some bad habits.

Dev wanting to make a game, is there a better engine or way to approach this or is modding Witch Trainer the 'easiest' and most accessible way.
