every artist is like that, especially prolific ones. you'll see Da Vinci sketches that were trash to him, but are framed in museums. the failed attempts and reworked sketches show the artists thought processes, and a visible record of their progression. if you were to lay it all out chronologically, you could see how they shored up their weaknesses and even turning points after 'eureka' moments.

this was the case for all artists before the digital age. whether or not modern digital artists save aborted images instead of continuing to rework them, i'm not sure. i suppose it depends on the artist. with a physical piece of paper, it cannot be reworked over and over, and is thus saved (usually).

thats just how it works. for one successful image, expect 10 or more attempts they were not satisfied with.
