It is a certain type of game that has obvious differences to many other multiplayer games that involve several players, and it's in some sort of arena type setting without any real reason beyond 'Push the enemy all the way back and wreck their shit'. Regardless of whether the term can be assigned to several other games, it was assigned to this one and is now associated with it enough that it's the first type of game you think of when hearing 'MOBA'.

The logic is that they're played in a very similar fashion to the RTS games that spawned them, but with more of an action-orient.

Personally I like the terms AoS and Aeon of Strife better. It sounds less retarded and it's a nod to the original prototype of the genre. Although a better term might be Strife-like, which also fits the naming convention of Rogue-like.
