Something that's easy to do from a technical standpoint and has plenty of room to expand with modular content is a tile based dungeon crawler with turn based battles. It's obviously not the most inspired gameplay for sure, but it can be livened up with unique mechanics. Assets made and configured once can be re-used many different times so there's a ton of return for your effort.

There's literally no reason not to just use rpgmaker to make an adventure game with no turn based combat. Getting into rpg fights with zombies or rats takes me out of the game whereas the adventure game format of talking to npc's and finding items to advance quests lends itself to the format.

If the writing is good - which is actually under appreciated and under praised imo - you can have minimalist gameplay which is beyond a VN but more than adequate for guys who just want a unique jerk off experience. If I want to actually play games seriously I have more than 1000 between Steam, GOG Galaxy and 3 games consoles.

Some of my favourite VNs play very much on the replay aspect, being just a few hours long, if even that, when you don't skip the text, and the game relies more on having many different basic routes that combine to determine if you reach one of the possible final outcomes or a dead end. From my experience, the only thing that really makes a difference is the lighting in the scene, and then the render quality, render samples, converged ratio and time settings. Also the texture compression in the advanced settings. But I'm still pretty novice.
