So I went ahead and downloaded Harame Simulator and I honestly got kind of bored. None of the girls are characters; they're just a picture that says "grind for X amount of time and then get a sex scene." If you want morality, Future Fragments will have SOMEWHAT of a system like this, as well as a secret mode where you generally are a complete asshole, complete with total reworks of the events/dialogue/endings of the game.

But, if you want total morality and choice with it, the zombie game I'm making later this year is probably going to be more your style; if you check the picture in the last post of mine, midway through you can see something that says "Recruit Gerard?".
This is the turning point of the game, where your team chooses to recruit the initial antagonist to increase your chances of survival; if you've been a hero all game, you'll be able to recruit him and enable the best ending possible. If you've been only average, your team won't trust your judgement as much, and neither will Gerard, so he'll run off to continue being a thorn in your side.
If you've been a complete asshole all game long, your team will actually recruit Gerard to REPLACE you, leaving you on your own to deal with the zombies, enabling much of the darker actions in the game.

There was actually a gigantic game I had planned with another artist where it would have been an episodic VN set in space; each episode would have been focused around one character from a specific culture/planet, out on an adventure/mission. After 5 or 6 episodes, all these characters would have ran into one another and a mega-episode would have resulted in all 6 having their ships destroyed, forcing them to band together on thier own ship, on a new mission to figure out who or what had been targeting them all specifically.

Would have had lots of universe building, huge variety of fetishes, all the character designs actually were completed but a lack of money/time available on the artist's part and difficulty in finding background artists and programmers (this was pre-Future Fragments) caused the project to die out. I do want to revive it someday, though.

The history of it as far as I know can be summed up like this:

1: Porn was pay per minute type stuff. There may have been ancient free community AIF roots in this era that continue today.

2: Porn moved onto subscriptions. The games in this era were Leisure Suit Larry, Lulu, etc.

3: People realized hentai existed and sometimes had websites with rare pics that made it over which you could see with a subscription. Since anime had finally made it on TV there was actually demand for it.

4: Through cross-distribution people became aware that you could get porn games from Japan. You had to order them through a catalogue and could get things like Gloria. Those were the premium place to get your copies of the Bondage Faeries, Super Taboo and Silky Whip, too.

5: People in the west tried to replicate those games but were just doing it for a laugh, resulting in ancient flash games like the Love Hina Dating Sim.

6: Newgrounds was a big center for porn flash at this point; the closest things to western games were here. The roots of a lot of games that continue today in some form were born here. Hentai Highschool, Brothel Sim games, Slave Maker, etc.

7: The first few serious attempts like Legend of Queen Opala come out. You also saw the "chan miracle" games, that is decent western VN's made by chans, such as Katawa Shoujo. Those inspired me to try making my own games instead of adding a bit to community projects.

8: Other communities started to really flourish. There were places out there like the hypnopics collective and so on making games in other systems like RAGS. There was also a hypnochan on some defunct alternate chan board. That's actually where I posted my crude first game Hypno Master, and later the first demo of Overwhored.

9: Devs have been popping up ever since, typically at varying levels of development. When patreon happened people could see making a living at making video games become a reality. As a result there's now a ton of devs.

Until some megaporn tycoon or electronic arts executive comes into dominate the industry once they realize there's money here there's still a chance for indies to become the first companies that'll stick around. Our Alicesofts and Liliths. On the other hand this is all built on crowdfunding with all the downsides that implies. Nobody can prevent Breeding Seasons from happening. So people are starting to build ties and learn how to hire people that won't disappear on you, make decent contracts, and avoid working for devs that are up to no good. That's something we as devs and workers in this very new industry can do now.

To be frank the future is pretty up in the air. We'll eventually end up with a "AAA" and "Indie" porn industry, just like the mainstream industry and probably set up about the same except with more bullshit because it's porn.

That's a good question, and one I worry about. It depends on how many big name Patreons go bust. That's not something that's going to stop happening, either. The transition from "amateur in everything," to "running a porn game studio" as a professional is enormous. Also businesses can simply implode when they hit too much success too fast if they're not prepared. These are things I've planned for myself. That said I don't think people will entirely reject crowdfunding. They'll just start to stick to the names they know and trust instead of giving money to anyone. People with stuff successfully made through crowdfunding in the past. What the industry is really waiting on is publisher money to build games without having to crowdfund and a marketplace to sell those games like steam. Options currently exist but they're not ideal. DLsite requires censorship and Itch.io, although the best option today has search issues with adult stuff and some issues with how stuff is paid out.

More than focusing on the gaming market at large, the Patreon model of "selling promises and dreams" is more akin to the Kickstarter craze of 2014, methinks. What killed it was the amount of shitty projects and the underperforming of the (few) that managed to get through. What good game came out of Kickstarter? Banner Saga? Sales tanked so hard on the second they are back begging for money. Star Citizen? The endless nostalgia remakes or indie projects that stalled or were cut? FTL was legit good, though.

I don't honestly know the resilience or the relative idiocy of the western porn games public, but even the most stubborn of donkeys should start to worry when nothing is coming out and there is only a flurry of half-completed projects and promises.

But maybe yer right, and the weg market will choke only when it reaches over-saturation. Digital economy does not follow traditional market models, though. But who knows.

The proper AAA porn industry is dead thanks to the Internet (budgets and earnings have tanked for decades and most pornstars nowadays make money on prostitution). Publisher money probably won't come, as porn is perceived as a toxic investment. Or the market changed: Lilithsoft itself has pretty much stopped throwing out games and TABA for example is nothing but a whales-milking machine.

If the recent AMAs with Gaben are right, Steam sooner or later will cave in and let porn games exist. That will probably be the day of judgement for this little quaint industry.

Arms Devicer is turnbased, but enemies have some moves where they grapple you (rendering you unable to move) and grope/fuck you, and moves that damage your clothes.
