I've gotten interested in making my own game, but there are a few hurdles that I am having trouble overcoming in the initial planning stage. I'm looking for advice and any responses would be greatly appreciated.

As my artistic talents are negligible and I cannot afford to hire an artist that I would like thus ruling out Visual Novels for the foreseeable future. I've decided to go down the route a text adventure game. Think of Zork if you are not familiar with the genre. The sticking point, however, is this I haven't been able to find a text adventure game that is speech heavy in its implementation. They all seem to use object-based systems for progression. 'Find the key then open the door' or 'figure out the name then talk the NPC' as the main systems for progression. As I'm not a programmer by trade I don't really know how to start. Room based advancement seems to be the standard but I want examples that are more VN design so I can get some rudimentary understanding as to I would design the game.

I would probably be using TADS3 as far as software goes.

In any case, if it's "mostly text with a graphical UI" variant, I'd say ... why not both? Have buttons for common actions (movement, looking around, taking inventory) and a text entry for more free-form stuff.

If one is adding a mouse-driven interface anyway, "hyperlinking" relevant nouns and phrases in the text itself is also a valid input method. Click on the link with a noun, get a description if that's the only option. Else, click to open a pop-up menu with choices what to do with the (noun), like "examine", "take" or "rape". Click on the hyperlinked phrase like "You could: [run away], [stand your ground] or [beg for mercy]" and you do that action.
