The message is that neither the townspeople or Shiki are completely right, just like how staying in the place your where born and gossiping about your neighbors isn't any better than running off to Tokyo.
It's pessimistic, but I think that the ideal end to both situations is finding a compromise that helps both parties. Some characters work towards a way for humans to live alongside Shiki, others become dogmatic and fall into self-destructive "us and them" attitudes. The important part is that it's a community effort. Whether it's one group to remove a part of the community because they're different or one person trying to supply a Shiki with enough blood for them to live, both are equally doomed without consensus.

Only if they're educated to act like that. Like the guy and his nurse gf showed, Shiki only suck blood because they'd starve otherwise. Most Shiki are told it's perfectly normal to suck blood and that they should treat humans like prey and Sunako and the Priest showed you need more than one human to support a Shiki without them dying of blood loss.
Like I said, the consent of the community is needed, both human and Shiki. The second they started excluding each other was the moment both were doomed.
