Because they were drawn the way fashion designers drew characters and the artists gave the girls all sorts of clothing. Considering that shoujo and josei are demographics where art goes to die mostly, it was really welcomed.

Given that their most stories involved fantastical girl adventures, the visuals were appropriate, but when things like Code Geass or XXXholic are where the forms and the tones clashed with the narrative.

CLAMP can't escape their niche now and their niche has passed.
